The Hoka Arahi 9 is ideal for runners seeking a stable, supportive daily trainer for easy miles and recovery runs, as well as walkers and anyone who spends long hours on their feet.

I am admittedly not someone who runs much in Hokas, though I love them to walk and do just about every other daily activity (namely, teaching and coaching), and I was excited to see what the Arahi 9 was all about on the run front.
In an honest moment, I was also a little bit nervous because Hoka is typically not a brand that works for me on the run. But because I was in the taper for the Chicago Marathon, I knew I had some shorter runs on the docket, and this felt like the perfect opportunity to give it a try.ย
While I typically donโt consider myself a shoe snob, it also doesnโt take much for me to know when a shoe is or is not going to work for me.

What typically makes me a skeptic of running in Hokas is the severe cushioning that makes me feel like I am running with weights attached to my feet, but the Hoka Arahi 9 reminded me right away of my beloved Brooks Ghosts in terms of stack height.
While I canโt compare the 9 to previous versions of the Arahi, I can certainly speak to what I noticed upon first wear.
Who Is It Good For?
- Wide Feet: Yes, available in regular, wide, and extra-wide, though the toe box may feel narrow.
- Heavier Runners: Yes, supportive cushioning and a stable platform.
- Long Runs: Somewhat, better suited for easy and recovery runs.
- Front of the Pack: No, limited energy return for faster workouts and racing.
While I am familiar with the Hoka brand, the Hoka Arahi is a new-to-me shoe. Letโs dive into why I found this shoe to be a solid (and stable) option for everyday running.
Hoka Arahi 9 Overview
This isnโt the shoe I would take with me to the track for speed workouts, nor would I even wear it on my long runs, but the Arahi 9 isnโt designed to be a flashy speed shoe.ย
Its biggest strengths are stability and consistency, and it helps to make the everyday run feel comfortable and controlled.

When people think of a stability shoe, thoughts can go to a stiff-feeling shoe, but that isnโt at all the case here.ย
The Arahi 9โs claim to fame is the H-Frame stability system that provides significant enough cushioning without being overly cushioned, something I have often struggled with when running in the Bondi.ย
To reiterate what was mentioned above, this shoe isnโt flashy, and it isnโt going to be the shoe that feels extra springy and like you are being propelled forward with very little effort.ย It is a shoe that provides a stable landing and feels like a dependable daily training shoe.

Hoka Arahi 9 Fit

Width: Standard, with wide and extra-wide options available
Toe Box: Slightly narrow
Arch: Supportive
Volume: Moderate
Upon first putting it on, I noticed that the shoe fit securely and supportively, and I have learned that this particular version of the Arahi has been updated with a softer mesh along the upper in order to boost support and provide a more secure fit along the heel.ย

Speaking as someone who has struggled with heel and foot problems throughout the last 10 months, this felt like the everyday shoe I was so desperately looking for, sort of the Goldilocks shoe: not too cushiony, but certainly not without proper support.
This shoe fit my foot pretty perfectly, but because I do have a narrow foot, the toe box did not bother me, though I could certainly see that being a problem for runners with less narrow feet.ย In that case, I might suggest going with a wide variant as opposed to sizing up another size.ย
Nobody likes the feeling of squished toes while walking or running, and while many runners wear it like a badge of honor, we really donโt want to be walking around with any fewer than 10 toenails due to an easy fix.

Ultimately, these shoes fit true-to-size, and they are a straightforward shoe with no bells and whistles, but this is the ideal everyday shoe, without a doubt.
Hoka Arahi 9 Feel
When I put on this shoe for the first time, I was surprised at how comfortable it felt.ย
My first thought actually wasnโt even about how it would feel on the run, but about how it would be perfect to wear for spirit dress days at work, and especially how perfect they are for coaching.ย
As a cross country coach, this shoe would allow me to get in a few miles with the team while also supporting me for standing long periods, timing their intervals.

My first run in this shoe was a short 3-miler that came about a week and a half before the Chicago Marathon. Granted, I had just taken a few days off to allow my foot some time to recover, but I was pleasantly surprised at how, for lack of a better word, good this shoe felt.ย
When I am going out for an easy run, I donโt want to give my shoe a second thought, and while that may sound counterintuitive to some, I find that to be the magic found within this shoe.ย To put it simply: this shoe is stable, supportive, and suitable for the everyday runner.
What has become a common theme is that the Arahi 9 is not meant to be a flashy shoe; I would describe it as a shoe that is as steady as a rock.ย
It is high quality in that it provides cushioning with a smooth heel-to-toe transition.ย

While this shoe may not stand out as anything particularly special, I find that is actually where the magic lies when it comes to this shoe.ย
Putting on this shoe and lacing it up before your run allows you to settle into a steady rhythm on the run without feeling like you have to perform or hit a certain time. It is a reliable shoe that works with you through the easy, controlled miles, and I think we sometimes take those runs, and the shoes that run those miles with us, for granted.
What other shoes are similar to the Hoka Arahi 9? Weโve tested a few that feel similar, but different based on the brand fit: While I donโt think it will be the shoe I reach for first, it is one that I know I can rely on while on the run or while teaching and coaching my high school students.ย The Hoka Arahi 9 delivers a smooth, stable ride with supportive cushioning without feeling overly bulky. Ideal for easy runs, recovery miles, walking, and all-day wear, itโs a dependable daily trainer that prioritizes comfort over speed and energy return. Though I am taking a couple of weeks off after running the Chicago Marathon (shout out to my fellow Chicago Marathon survivors!), I know that this is a shoe I can rely on to serve many different purposes, and what more can we really ask for in a shoe? Kelli is a high school teacher and coach living in Dallas, Texas. ย When sheโs not in the classroom, she enjoys running (of course!), reading, and spending time with her beagle, Mack. She takes any and every opportunity to travel and experience new places and cultures (ideally, on foot!), and is passionate about cheering on her Texas Longhorns. ย She is grateful for the life and opportunities running has given her, and looks forward to many more years on the run.
