In an era where everyone is trying to max out every single metric in their daily life, the Norda 055 takes that philosophy directly to the trails.
We like to max out everything in todayโs world (protein maxing, fiber maxing), and I found the Norda 055 to be cushion maxing.
And at $325, itโs definitely price maxing too! Thatโs not a bad thing if you view it as a serious long-term investment in maximum underfoot protection and indestructible durability. But it still has a hefty price tag.
And if you want proof of what this max-stack beast can handle, look no further than Rachel Entrekin.
She won the Cocodona 250 outright and set the overall course record in early prototype pairs, showing us all what true mile maxing looks like across 250 miles of brutal Arizona dirt.
I tested these during a crisp Colorado fall, taking them across a full menu of real-world trail conditions: slick, leaf-covered singletrack, morning dew-slicked granite rocks, and dry afternoon dust.
While it looks like a heavy-duty, rugged hiking boot in photos, I found it acts like a high-powered, ultra-durable trail running shoe in practice.
It turns out to be a fun, protective shoe that can go the distance while keeping my feet comfortable through whatever mountain terrain I threw at it.
Who Is It Good For?
- Wide Feet: There is no wide option available. While the interior volume is decent, I found it slightly narrow on the outer edges.
- Technical Trails: Yes!
- Long Runs: Rachel crushed 250 miles in it, so Iโm not sure how much longer someone could possibly go!
- Front of the Pack: A super cush race shoe for those ultra distances.
This shoe is great for trail runners looking for a super-durable, highly cushioned mountain shoe that delivers sticky traction on unpredictable terrain.
Norda 055 Overview
The Norda 055 builds directly on the brandโs reputation for creating lightweight yet virtually indestructible trail footwear.
It definitely has a beefy, boot-like appearance. However, once I actually got moving on the trail, I was impressed by how light and agile it felt on my feet.
The upper pairs a wider-weave bio-circular Dyneema fabric for added breathability with a soft internal fabric layer that helped manage chafing for me during long efforts.
Plus, the standard 055 upper sheds water and light weather since it’s naturally water-resistant, keeping your feet protected when things get soggy.
While I noticed that the double-layer upper can run warm on sunny afternoon runs, Rachel Entrekin clearly didnโt mind the heat on her way to crushing 250 miles of scorching Arizona desert!
I think this would be a great winter shoe option, although they just came out with a 055 G+ that is made for fall and winter that looks promising!
Underfoot, Norda brought back the 5mm lug depth from the original 001 for off-trail biting power, plus an extra 10mm of 100% Arnitel TPE-E supercritical foam from heel to toe.
I really appreciated the reinforced rand wrapping the base and the sturdy toe bumper that doubled down on rock protection. They really did design the shoe to take a beating.
Meanwhile, the built-in stretchy knit sock collar acted as a seamless gaiter to keep annoying trail grit, pebbles, and leaves out of my shoes.

Norda 055 Fit
Length: True to size
Width: Narrow
Toe Box: Standard
Arch: Standard
Volume: Standard
Sizing requires careful consideration before you buy, especially with a price-maxed tag. I strongly recommend sizing up at least a 1/2 size, and maybe even more if your feet tend to swell on ultra distances.
Because Dyneema fabric has zero stretch, the upper will not pack out or loosen up over time. That makes this a shoe I strongly recommend trying on in person if you can.
I found the 055 offered an accommodating interior volume that felt snug and locked down through my heel and midfoot while giving my toes room to wiggle.
With my standard-width feet, I felt the outer edges along my pinky-toe side pressed against the rigid, reinforced rand. Fortunately, the soft internal fabric lining kept me completely free from chafing during my testing.
However, I didnโt do a long run over 20 miles in them, so it’s possible hot spots or chafing could start to develop at true ultra distances for wider feet.
I actually loved the lacing system: the textured diamond-pattern laces gripped tight and stayed tied without me ever needing to tie a runnerโs loop. The tongue features a clever padded design that prevents lace bite and top-of-foot fatigue for me.
At the top, the built-in stretchy gaiter collar and handy pull tab made stepping in easy while keeping dirt, dust, and leaves outside where they belong.
Norda 055 Feel
On the trail, I felt the 055 deliver a plush, bouncy, high-stack ride.
Because of that elevated cushion platform, I noticed it can take a little bit of getting used to. I slightly rolled my ankle a couple of times on my very first outing until my legs adapted to the tall stack height.
Once I got used to the stack, I found the shoe to be a lot of fun!
I really liked the heel-up feel that pushed me smoothly forward down the trail, and I was pretty blown away by how the shoe handled dry dust, slick leaves, and wet, dew-covered rocks.
The traction I experienced on loose rock and steep scrambles was pretty solid. That is all thanks to the topography-textured Vibram Megagrip Elite rubber and the central carbide lug โplugsโ that bit effortlessly into slippery surfaces.
I could see wanting a little deeper lugs for muddy sections, but for most everything else it works!
The beefed-up midsole, double-layer upper, and high collar might be overkill for a mellow trail run; I think it was designed for those long, adventurous mountain days where ultimate traction, comfort, and indestructible build quality matter most.
While it is price-maxing at $325, you have to treat the 055 as a long-term investment in durability, safety, and foot protection.
As a general rule of thumb, most of us expect to replace our trail running shoes right around 300 miles, maybe 400 to 500 if we have a solid shoe rotation.
But Norda athletes routinely blow past that landmark without losing any of that top-tier performance underfoot.
That kind of ridiculous longevity and build quality is why so many runners point to Nordaโs low cost per wear as the real reason itโs worth dropping the cash over traditional trail shoes.
Our team has tested a wide variety of trail running shoes; here are ones we find most similar in this category: The Norda 055 is a highly cushioned trail running shoe with excellent traction and foot protection, making it great for long mountain adventures. The $325 price tag is steep, but its build quality and longevity make it worth the investment for trail runners who want an option that outlasts most trail shoes.
