Best Women’s Running Shoes According to Running Coaches (Real Miles, Real Reviews)

Women’s running shoes aren’t just smaller men’s shoes. They’re designed differently, and it matters. Here are our team’s picks for best women’s running shoes (and the why behind the design!).

Best Women's Running Shoes

No rule says you have to wear a men’s or women’s shoe; you can absolutely swap if the size matches. BUT… it might not feel as comfortable underfoot, and over time, your gait could become unbalanced.

That’s because shoes aren’t just about the size; they’re designed with a few key features that account for the anatomical differences between male and female feet.

Women’s shoes tend to have a narrower heel, often a narrower midfoot, a bit more room in the toebox, and often use slightly softer cushioning. It’s often described as our feet being more triangular.

They’re also designed with biomechanics in mind, like a larger Q Angle (the angle from hip to knee), which means many women’s shoes include added arch support, midfoot stability, or more flexibility up front to keep your stride feeling smooth and comfortable.

The bottom line: the right women’s shoe isn’t just a smaller men’s model; it can make running feel a whole lot better.

11 Best Women’s Running Shoes of 2026

  • Best All Around Daily Trainer – Asics Novablast 5
  • Most Versatile Shoe – Ryka Podflow
  • Best Traditional Running Shoe – Nike Pegasus 42
  • Best Stability Shoe – Brooks Glycerin 23
  • Best for Wider Fitย  – Hoka Bondi
  • Best Max Cushion – New Balance Fresh Foam 1080
  • Best for Run-Walk Intervals – Ryka Devo X Max
  • Best Lightweight Option –ย On Cloudsurfer 2
  • Best for Speed Work – Saucony Speed 5
  • Women’s Trail Shoe – Merrell Antora 4ย
  • Best Road to Trail Shoe – Altra Experience Wild 3

Most of the brands on this list make shoes for both men and women, but we’ve also included one that’s shaking things up by designing shoes just for women (sorry, fellas!). Ryka was actually founded by a woman who set out to create shoes built around the unique needs of women’s bodies.

Ryka’s “game-changing tech is based on the โ€˜Q Angleโ€™, the inside angle of the quadriceps muscle that is 3-4% greater in women than men, which impacts a womanโ€™s stance and weight distribution on her feet.โ€

This research study found that a good, cushioned daily trainer usually helps even things out, but women are also more sensitive to changes in stiffness, cushioning, and fit.

We love seeing more women-focused brands entering the running space, and we’re excited to share gear designed with women’s bodies in mind.

Got a favorite brand you think we should check out? Send it our way, we’d love to hear about it.

10 Best Women’s Running Shoes

A reminder that the best shoe is always going to be the one that feels best for you. There’s a study that proves this! But we hope seeing some options from different brands gives you a place to start.

Each of these utilize a specific women’s shoe last (mold) to help with the heel and toe box fit. And with a team of 10 female running coaches around here, we’ve put in a lot of miles to help make these selections.

Best All Around Daily Trainer – Asics Novablast 5

Asics is one of the brands that you’re going to find a range of widths and even a good handful of more narrow fits. While there are so many good models to pick from, the Novablast 5 is going to be the best all around trainer.

The 5 has a full length midsole with their FF Blast Max foam. This shoe is a more responsive cushion that youโ€™re not going to sink into as much.

We really like this level of cushion for every runner. Itโ€™s going to hold up for LONG runs and lots of daily miles.Novablast 5 Heel drop

While this is a neutral shoe, with no guiderails or anything for stability, it absolutely has some of that built into the design. The width of the platform from toe to heel reduces pronation and provides a really good ride.

  • Weight: 7.9 oz womenโ€™s
  • Heel toe drop:ย 8mm
  • Not available in wide
  • Available in eight colors
  • Available atย Asics.com for $160

Most Versatile Workout Shoe – Ryka Podflow

This is our first featured shoe from Ryka, featuring its unique Ryka Q Technology, which is based on the Q Angle.

This is going to be truly a shoe that you can grab for anything: running, HIIT classes, running errands or even run/walk intervals.

The midsole is made of ACTIVenergyโ„ข translucent EVA foam, which offers a soft and responsive midsole cushioning.ย  The pods along the sole of the shoe also offer targeted support for each part of the foot while promoting natural motion. ย

The heel has a nice rocker, and the pod along the arch feels a bit firmer, which helps promote a natural feeling motion while exercising.

Ryka Podflow Review

These shoes feel more stable than squishy, yet they did not make my feet ache after wearing them all day.

  • Weight:ย 8.3 oz
  • Heel Drop:ย 10mm
  • Available in black, bright blue, verdant yellow, brilliant white
  • Available in wide
  • Available onย ryka.comย for $89.99
  • Read our full review of the Ryka Flowpod here >>

Best Traditional Running Shoe – Nike Pegasus 42

The Nike Pegasus is one of the most popular running shoes of all time.

The Pegasus remains a well priced daily trainer that is going to be extremely durable, carry runners through a lot of easy miles without feeling heavy or clunky. Itโ€™s not a max cushioned soft trainer, that goes to theirย Vomero line up, and itโ€™s not a speed workout shoe, but it can pick up the pace.

The fit is going to help with preventing any heel slipping or midfoot sliding.ย Nike Pegasus 42 Review

This is a good option for your easy weekday runs or for the support of a marathon training run.

  • Weight:ย 10.6 oz Menโ€™s, 8.6 oz Womenโ€™s
  • Stack Height:ย 37 mm
  • Heel Drop:ย 10 mm
  • Colors:ย 6 colors
  • Available in wide:ย Yes for some colors
  • Available atย nike.comย for $145
  • Readย our full review of the Nike Pegasus 42ย here >>

Best Stability Shoe- Brooks Glycerin 23

The Glycerin remains one of Brooks most loved running shoes! Itโ€˜s a great allโ€“around running shoe, providing great cushioning for a variety of running distances.

Brooks slightly changed things and use their DNA tuned foam underfoot. This EVA foam is the most durable and allows for a lot of softness. With their DNA tuned technology they can change the softness in different areas of the shoe based on usage type. In this case, a go to daily trainer.

If you’re someone who tends to deal with bunions or other issues needing a little extra space in the toe box, the Glycerin is a solid pick.ย  You’ll have enough room plus the upper is made from a flexible mesh to accommodate a wider fit or different toe shapes.

Brooks Glycerin GTS 23 Overview

Despite all the cushion, the shoe remains fairly light at 9 oz and has a 8mm heel drop, encouraging speed andย comfort.

If youโ€™re needing a wider fit, this model comes in both wide and extra wide!

  • Weight:ย 10.6ย oz Menโ€™s,ย 9.5ย oz Womenโ€™s
  • Stack Height:ย 38 mmย
  • Heel Drop:ย 8ย mm
  • Available 8ย Colors
  • Available in wide and extra wide
  • Available onย brooksrunning.comย forย $175
  • Read our full review of the Brooks Glycerin 23 here >>

Best for a Wider Fit- Hoka Bondi 9

The Bondi is always one of our go-to options for a solid shoe, whether you’re running or walking. The recent update has kept this one at the top of our lists because itโ€™s a shoe thatโ€™s going to feel good from start to finish.

We have to admit the last model broke our hearts a little but we absolutely love the Bondi 9โ€™s firmer and smoother feel. You arenโ€™t going to feel like youโ€™re sinking into the shoe, especially if you plan to wear it for a long time. Which is good news for your lower back!!

You’ll find more wiggle room in the toebox and a narrow(ish) fit in the midfoot for a more comfortable fit depending on your foot shape.Hoka Bondi 9 Review

Even with all that cushioning, the Bondi 9 still manages to feel lightweight, which is a huge win for a shoe this plush.

The Bondi also comes in wide and extra wide so there are plenty of options available.

  • Weight:ย 9.3 oz Womenโ€™s
  • Heel Drop: 5 mm
  • Usage: Easy runs, long runs, easily up to marathon distance
  • 6 colors
  • Available in wide
  • Available onย Hoka.comย for $170
  • Checkout ourย complete Hoka Bondi 9 reviewย >>

Best Max Cushion- New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 V15

New Balance is one of the few brands to offer extra-wide sizes in some models. And while we arenโ€™t looking for overall wide fit, but a roomy toe boxโ€ฆfrequently the two go together.

New Balanceโ€™s Fresh Foam is every bit as lovely as it sounds for long runs. These shoes feel fabulous when you slip them on and yet maintain good responsiveness. Unlike the super plush HOKA Bondi that you can sink in to, youโ€™ll remain quick off the ground in these shoes.

These shoes do not have a padded collar which some runners may dislike, but I didnโ€™t notice any issues with that. I did the normalย heel lock lacingย as will all my shoes and they felt great.

New Balance 1080 v15 overview

That taller stack height provides a slightly wider base and more stability without in anyway being a stability shoe.

  • Weight: 9.5oz Menโ€™s, 7.3 oz Womenโ€™s
  • Heel Drop: 6mm
  • Available in 3 colors
  • Available in wide sizes
  • Available newbalance.com for $170
  • Readย our full review of the New Balance 1080v15ย here >>

Best Lightweight Option- On Cloudsurfer 2

The fit of On shoes tends to be more narrow, especially in the heel and midfoot. While sometimes a narrower fit isn’t ideal, it’s actually helpful when it comes to women’s shoes because it almsot mimics that triangle shape we mentioned above.

Cloudsurfer 2 is a moderate cushioned, lower stack height, running shoe for shorter easy runs thatโ€™s also high on our list of great walking shoes.

At 9oz, the Cloudsurfer 2 is lightweight but feels supportive enough to protect you through a variety of runs. It balances performance with weight in a way that makes this a reliable, smooth trainer. On Cloudsurfer 2 Review

For a daily trainer, these have the right amount of energy return and cushion while feeling breathable and secure on your feet. The cushioned midsole of these shoes isnโ€™t overly plush, which does feel like a departure from prior Cloudsurfer models. The changes to this shoeโ€™s midsole still feel extremely comfortable.

  • Weight:ย 7.9 oz womenโ€™s, 9.2 oz menโ€™s
  • Heel drop:ย 9mm
  • Available in 4 colors
  • Available at On Running for $160
  • Readย our full review of the On Cloudsurfer 2ย here >>

Best for Speed Work- Saucony Speed 5

This is a shoe that’s going to feel good from the very first run, no break-in period needed!

Theย Endorphin Speed 5ย fits true to size and actually gives you a little more wiggle room in the toebox compared to the previous version, which was a welcome upgrade.

That roomier feel comes from the new engineered mesh upper. Itโ€™s lighter, more breathable, and a whole lot less restrictive than what we saw in the Speed 4. The goal was to drop some weight, and it feels like Saucony delivered without sacrificing comfort.

Again, this is a shoe that sometimes may get a rap for being a little narrow. But as we’ve noted, that’s ideal if you’re looking for a shoe designed with a woman’s foot shape in mind! saucony endorphin speed 5 review

Itโ€™s a solid pick for interval workouts, tempo runs, and anything fast-paced.ย But Saucony also built it with enough cushioning and durability to carry you through longer training runs, too, making it a pretty versatile option to have in your rotation.

  • Weight:ย 8.1 oz Womenโ€™s
  • Heel drop:ย 8 mm
  • Stack height:ย 36 mm
  • Available in X colors
  • Not available in wide
  • Available fromย Saucony.com for $170
  • Read our full review of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 here >>

Women’s Trail Shoe Merrell Antora 4ย

This trail shoe from Merrell was designed specifically for women giving more room upfront in the toebbox and then tapering for a more narrow fit in the forefoot and heel.

The FloatProโ„ข Foam midsole was cushioned enough on the trails, butย  still had the ground feel I always crave. It was a great balance for shorter runs.Merrell Antora 4 Review

These are absolutely going to be more of moderate trail or perhaps even just a great hiking shoe! And 100% we recommend trail running shoes for hiking.

  • Weight:ย 7.7 oz Womenโ€™s (women-specific fit!)
  • Heel drop: 8mm
  • 9 colors
  • Available wide and waterproof
  • Available at Merrell.com for $130
  • Read our full review of the Women’s Merrell Antora 4 here >>

Best Road to Trail Shoe –ย Altra Experience Wild 3

Altra is another brand that’s designed for women with it’s FIT4HERโ„ข technology.

Altra designs its womenโ€™s shoes with a narrower heel, longer arch, and unique metatarsal spacing to better accommodate womenโ€™s feet. This means they are narrower through the midfoot and heel.

The Experience Wild 3 will still have the foot-shaped toe box and a wider forefoot that you’re used to finding with the Altra brand. The only difference here is the 4mm heel drop.

If you want to try out zero-drop shoes but are nervous to make a huge jump, this is a good in-between option!Altra Experience Wild 3 Review

You will find lugs on the bottom of these to help with traction but theyโ€™re not going to be super noticeable if youโ€™re running a mix of roads and trails.

It strikes that perfect balance between lightweight and cushionedโ€ฆ.all while still giving you some of that ground feel like you would in a traditional zero drop.

  • Weight: 11.1 oz Menโ€™s, 9.1oz Womenโ€™s
  • Stack Height:ย 32ย mm
  • Heel Drop: 4 mm
  • 5 Colors
  • Not available in wide
  • Available onย Altrarunning.comย for $150
  • Read our full review of the Altra Experience Wild 3 here >>

There are honestly so many more shoes that we could add to this list of the best women’s running shoes. But for now, we hope that maybe you’ve found a pair that catches your eye.

Our team will continue testing and making updates to ensure this is the best of the best.
