The Cloudflow 5 is the newest version of On’s tempo trainer, featuring a redesigned upper, an updated Speedboard, and a new rocker geometry. I didn’t run in the Cloudflow 4, but from what I’ve read, this update brings more cushioning and a snappier ride.
When Coach Amanda told me the On Cloudflow 5 was floating my direction, I was pumped — I’d heard great things about this uptempo trainer! The shoe does not disappoint, delivering a speedy, propulsive experience with a firm ride and On’s always eye-catching design.
And holy Life of a Showgirl, is it fast?! The Cloudflow 5 is a crisp, snappy addition to On’s lineup and a fantastic option for speed and tempo workouts.
Who Is It Good For?
- Wide Feet: Nope. The midfoot and forefoot are both on the narrow side.
- Heavier Runners: Probably not. The platform is slim and the ride is firm.
- Long Runs: Pass. It’s made for short, speedy efforts like tempo runs and intervals.
- Front of the Pack: Absolutely. This shoe shines when you pick up the pace!
On Cloudflow 5 Overview
When I first unboxed the On Cloudflow 5, my immediate thought was, “This shoe looks fast!”
Sleek, streamlined, and built for speed, it’s a big step forward from the Cloudflow 4. The updates, a new rocker shape, glass-fiber/nylon Speedboard, and Helion™ HF superfoam make a noticeable difference on the run.
After about 35 miles of testing, from relaxed runs to 400m repeats and tempo efforts, I found the Cloudflow 5 to be firm, responsive, and built for quicker days. It’s a touch more cushioned than its predecessor, but still far from soft or squishy.
This is a shoe that keeps you connected to the road, delivering that classic On “ground feel” with just enough protection for faster paces.
At 9.8 ounces, it’s not the lightest tempo trainer on the market, but it runs lighter than it looks. The rocker geometry gives it a smooth, rolling stride that rewards efficient runners and forefoot strikers with a quick, snappy toe-off.
This isn’t a max-cushion cruiser or a high-bounce supershoe, and that’s exactly the point. The Cloudflow 5 comes to life in shorter, hard efforts, and helps you hit those harder paces. If you fancy a firmer, responsive ride with a touch of Swiss engineering flair, it’s worth a look.

Cloudflow 5 Fit
Every On shoe I’ve tested has two things in common: they look fantastic and fit like they were made just for me. The Cloudflow 5 keeps that streak alive. On clearly knows how to make a shoe wrap your foot just right.
Starting at the heel, it’s nicely padded without feeling bulky, and that higher heel counter gives structure without feeling restrictive. Heel lockdown was effortless, and I never had any slipping, even during faster runs.
Through the midfoot, things get a little snug, which I personally love since I have a low-volume foot. But if you’ve got a wider midfoot, it may feel tight. This is definitely the firmest area of the shoe, and you’ll notice that after just a few steps.
The forefoot opens slightly but still trends slim overall. There’s not a ton of room for toe splay, so if you like extra space, that’s worth noting.
Sizing is spot on as my men’s 11 fit perfectly. The tongue has just enough padding for comfort without adding bulk, and it sits perfectly above the lace line (what’s with so many shoes lately having tongues that barely make it there?). I didn’t have to fuss with the laces much to lock in the fit. Once I did, it felt secure, connected, and ready to move.
Overall, the Cloudflow 5 has a snug, streamlined fit that’s more performance-minded than plush.
The midfoot opens up just slightly but is still well-supported—something I wasn’t expecting given the split-sole construction. As someone with narrower feet, I appreciated how natural and secure it felt without having to make major lace adjustments. The toe box has a touch of wiggle room—not overly spacious, but comfortable enough that my toes never felt cramped, even late into long runs.
Lacing is traditional and straightforward, and I had no problem dialing in a solid lockdown. The fit runs true to size. I stuck with my usual Men’s 11 and felt right at home.
On Cloudflow 5 Feel
The Cloudflow 5 leans fully into that “fast shoe” identity. The engineered woven mesh upper wraps the foot in a sleek, locked-in feel, comfortable but not loose. It’s more breathable than many other On models, though still not the best option for hot summer miles.
From the moment you lace up, this shoe feels quick. The design, weight, and geometry all work together to make you want to pick up the pace.
Underfoot, On’s Helion HF foam pairs with a nylon Speedboard infused with glass fibers, creating a firm but energetic feel. The board compresses slightly as you land and springs back as you push off, giving you that little pop of propulsion. A gentle rocker helps keep transitions smooth, though it’s much subtler than what you’d find in a plated racer.
Now, let’s talk about firmness.
There’s a fine line between “responsive” and “too firm,” and the Cloudflow 5 walks it closely. I love ground feel, but when a shoe crosses that line, it starts to sound and feel like my feet are smacking the pavement instead of bouncing off it. And this one edges that way at times.
That said, the Cloudflow 5 shines when you pick up the pace. It feels lighter than its 9.8 ounces and encourages a fast cadence that makes 10K and tempo efforts feel smooth and efficient. It’s not a shoe I’d grab for long or easy runs, as the firmness can wear on you after about an hour. But for speedwork or faster sessions, this shoe really comes alive.
There’s a touch more give in the heel and forefoot, with a notably firmer midfoot. While it’s not technically a stability shoe, it still provides a supportive, balanced feel through the heel and ankle. And that outsole? Fantastic. Grippy, durable, and confidence-inspiring on wet pavement or tight turns.
Similar Shoes to the On Cloudflow 5
- Adidas Boston 13 – Less firm but equally peppy and fast, it’s another shoe I reach for frequently.
-
Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 – Lighter and softer, it’s a go to for many of our athletes (not as soft as the Endorphin Pro)
-
Hoka Mach 6 – Softer, more of an everyday trainer, but you can still pick up the pace in it.
Our Verdict
Not everyone enjoys a firm shoe, but the front of the pack often leans towards them for that faster feel and more ground preconception. We don’t think it’s a shoe for everyone, but it’s absolutely a great option for speed days, we hope it drops a little weight in future models.
Well, there you have it! I hope you enjoyed this breakdown of the On Cloudflow 5. If you’ve tested this shoe — or earlier versions — we’d love to hear your thoughts!
