Best Hydration Vests for Runners: Tested for Fit, Bounce, and Long Run Comfort

The best hydration vest won’t bounce around, fits comfortably, and lets you run hands-free. It might take a little trial and error to find the right one, but we promise they do exist. We’ve put together some of our favorites in the list below to help you avoid spending hours scrolling online.

best hydration vest

You should have absolutely no shame in wearing a hydration vest. A hydrated runner is a happy runner, in my opinion.

I learned pretty quickly after moving to Colorado. The sun heats up fast, and unlike when I lived in Philadelphia, there aren’t a bunch of shops or water fountains along most trails.

I’ll admit, I used to be anti-hyration vest because I thought it would feel annoying to run with. But after a few runs, I got used to it pretty quickly.

There are a lot of options out there, so we’ve narrowed it down to some of the best choices to help you decide what might work best, whether you’re hitting the trails, heading out for a training run, or gearing up for a marathon.

Best Hydration Vest

Hydration vests can be a little tricky when it comes to fit. Sometimes they’re too snug, too loose, or they cause chafing in all the wrong places.

That’s why our team put these through real-life testing to make sure they truly stand out as some of the best hydration vests for runners.

Best All Around Hydration Vest – Nathan Pinnacle Pro 6 Liter Hydration Race Vestย

The Nathan Pinnacle Pro Hydration Race Vest is a great addition to the Nathan hydration vest lineup, offering a 6L option that keeps the vest lightweight and easy to run in.

The main feature I noticed immediately in this vest is its lightweight design, as the fabric and feel felt substantially lighter and more breathable from the moment I took it out of the box. This is a really nice departure from other vests Iโ€™ve worn, which can feel dense, heavy, and almost more like a traditional school backpack versus a piece of running gear.

Nathan Pinnacle Hydration Vest

The Pinnacle Pro 6L has ample gear storage, including a top-loading rear pocket with two compartments, a bottom-zip pocket, two side pockets, two bottle pockets, and a front zip pocket. The front zip pocket was a little too small to hold my phone when the water bottles were full in the front, so I found this pocket better for keys, cards, and/or gels.

The pockets on the side and back are great for stuffing extra layers in the winter or any other gear you might need on your run, and there are also bungee cords at the top and bottom that can secure poles in place if youโ€™re out on the trails.

There are two water bottles in addition to the accessible compartment for a 2L bladder in the back โ€“ these will be a matter of personal preference, but they are easy to fill up and use, and the long straws make them easily accessible on the run.

Specs

  • Sizes XS-XL
  • Hydration: two 20oz soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: up to 2L compartment in the back
  • Available 2 colors
  • Storage capacity: 6L
  • Check it out fromย Nathan.com for $200

Best for Shorter Torso โ€“ย Salomon Adv Skin 5L

Iโ€™ve tested out a few things from Salomon and all of their packs impress me.

Itโ€™s the ultimate hydration pack for women with narrower chests and shoulders.ย It Salomon Advanced Skin features a curved front and tapered 500ml soft flasks with straws. This allows for a better fit against your chest and eliminates pressure on the chest as well when cinched tight.

It can even hold an additional bladder, loads of gear, and even your cellphone, thanks to the many pouches and zippered pockets it has. Youโ€™ll also get multiple pole holder solutions for versatile options in attaching poles.

best hydration vest for petite women

Iโ€™ve also heard fromย shorter runners that it felt super comfortable on their torsos. And while I am a tall runner, I have a very short torso and would 100% agree that, with some packs, they feel like they are hitting my shorts and rubbing, but I never had that issue with Salomon.

This one also had great pocket access in the front, which some smaller packs donโ€™t. I would also say this is an outstanding choice for just about anyone.

And while it used to be on the higher end of price, now they are also right in line with everyone else.

Specs

  • Sizes XS-XL
  • Hydration: two 500ml soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: up to 2L compartment in the back
  • Available 5 colors
  • Storage capacity: 5L
  • Check it out from Salomon.com for $145

Budget Friendly Optionย โ€“ Ultimate Direction Vesta

Ultimate Directionโ€™s Adventure Vesta is ideal for a long day on the trail. It includes enough space and pockets for snacks, hydration, layers, and even a few safety items.

You get a total of 6 pockets with the Vesta. The front stretchy mesh storage can store your phone, some snacks for fuel, and even valuables. The total storage for this vest comes to 10.3L.

The Comfort Cinch technology on the Vesta provides a nice, custom fit with easy on-the-go adjustments. It includes 4-way stretch material in key places to move with you and stay nice and snug. With the sliding rail sternum and waist straps, youโ€™re bound to find a good fit.

Best Ultimate Direction Hydration Pack

It even has a new, redesigned trekking pole holder for your next trail run. It minimizes bounce and snaps out of the way when youโ€™re not using it.

Iโ€™ve also run with this pack and again, as I mentioned above, it has tons of pockets. But I didnโ€™t like that I needed to buy the bladder separately.

However, itโ€™s a favorite among many of my runner friends who want to be able to take off jackets or gear as the weather changes.

It has more room in the pack to carry things, which makes it ideal for more trail running days where you need extra fuel and the weather is often changing on you.

Specs

  • Sizes SM-L
  • Hydration: two 17oz soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: 500ml
  • Available 2 colors
  • Storage capacity: 2L
  • Check it out from Amazon.com for $58

Best Lightweight Vest for Race Day โ€“ On Running Ultra Vest

Admit it, we care about our race day photos!! Iโ€™ve heard some of you say thatโ€™s why you donโ€™t wear a vest. So letโ€™s find a way to stay on top of nutrition and get that great photo.

Donโ€™t let the name fool you, this isnโ€™t just a super long trail runners vest.ย Available in 5L and 10L, you can decide how much hydration you want to carry vs use on course. I personally love being able to empty out a flask and then grab water on course, my brain tells me Iโ€™m getting lighter, ha!

Bungie cord adjustment across the front and sides does make this a Unisex item, but it comes in sizes from XXS to XL.

Specs

  • Sizes XS-XL
  • Hydration: two 500mL soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: not applicable here
  • Available 3 color
  • Storage capacity: 10L

Ready for Anything Hydration Vest – KIPRUN 15L UltraVest

This vest from KIPRUN is thoughtfully designed with every feature a mountain runner could possibly want. You can use it as a pack or a vest.

There are pockets in the front for bottles, or you can add a bladder to the back for longer trail runs or ultras.

Our team took this vest out on a couple of shorter runs up Bear Peak in Boulder and was impressed by how stable it felt (read: no bounce) even carrying the bare minimum.

The bladder does move around a lot inside the vest when there isnโ€™t much else in there to hold it in place, but the vest itself did not move.

Despite the black color and multiple layers of pockets, the vest breathed well and I did not overheat even in 90 degree weather and Colorado sun.kiprun 15l vest

If you plan to take this out on the trails, there’s a simple, easy-to-use pole carry system: Tuck each end of your folded up poles into an elastic band and carry them horizontally on the bottom of the vest. No need to worry about strapping on an extra piece of gear for easy access on the run.

A waterproof phone pocket, need we say more? A dedicated phone pocket means no choosing between a phone and a bottle. Waterproof material and taped seams protect your phone from both the elements and sweat. I did have to finagle a bit to get my iPhone 15 Mini in and out on the move โ€“ especially with a full water bottle packed underneath it.

Stretchy outer pocket for a wind or insulating layer: Easily accessible on the move, and you donโ€™t have to unpack your whole vest to squeeze it in.

2 HUGE snack pockets in the front: I value easy access to snacks. This vest has the biggest snack pockets weโ€™ve seen.

Specs

  • Sizes XS-XL
  • Hydration: two 500ml soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: up to 2L compartment in the back
  • Available 1 color
  • Storage capacity: 15L
  • Check it out from Decathlon.com for $149

Best Hydration Vest for Larger Bodies – REI Swiftland 5 Hydration Vest

This REI vest is highly rated by runners who may struggle to find a hydration vest that fits larger builds.

A lot of the time, hydration vests just don’t fit right and are often too snug, which can make you feel downright uncomfortable.

The sizing for this ranges from XS to 3X, and it has sternum and torso straps that allow comfortable,ย small adjustments and feature Z-buckles for a secure closure.

This vest can carry two flasks in the front pockets and a bladder in the back. So whatever your preference is, or if you want to carry more hydration, you’ll have options!

There’s also a TON of pockets so you can store your fuel, extra gear, and if heading to the trails, trekking poles and whatever else you may need for a trail adventure.

Specs

  • Sizes XS-XXXL
  • Hydration: two 500ml soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: up to 1.5L compartment in the back
  • Available 2 colors
  • Storage capacity: 5L
  • Check it out from Rei.com for $109

Hydration Vest with All the Pockets – Mammut Aenergy Trail Vest 12

ย This vest has an interesting layout – although it features a 12 liter capacity, it carries like a much smaller vest.

A lot of the storage space comes from the overlapping pockets on the front and sides (including 2 zippered pockets big enough to fit an iPhone 15 and 2 bottle pockets with elastic bands to prevent bounce).

The back includes a large mesh pocket and a smaller internal pocket that are both reachable while wearing the vest, perfect for stashing layers or other gear on the go.ย mammut vest

Itโ€™s comfortable, breathable, and doesnโ€™t bounce or chafe. I raced a half-marathon in it and loved all of the pockets for gear and fuel organization.

I was a little skeptical of the unisex sizing, but the front closure system, similar to the one used in the Salomon Skin running vests, allows for a customizable fit.

Specs

  • Sizes XS-L
  • Hydration: two 500ml soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: not particularly designed for this
  • Available 2 color
  • Storage capacity: 12L
  • Check it out from Backcountry.com for $149

Ready for the Trails – North Face Summit Series Run Vest 10

This lightweight, breathable vest with pockets in all the right sizes The North Face Summit Series Run Vest 10 tops my list of trail vests.ย ย

Luckily I was able to test the Summit Series Run Vest 10 in my full range of running clothes from winter puffy jacket to tank top and sports bra in one week in Colorado. Iโ€™m also the person who takes my vest on every run so it was used on everything from 3 to 17 miles.ย

Letโ€™s start with all the pockets.ย This is what I want in a vest.ย Two front pockets for flasks, but honestly I use one of these for my phone on the everyday runs and my phone actually fits because of the zipper to expand the size of these pockets.ย NF summit series run vest

A secured zipper pocket, I know Iโ€™m not losing my keys.ย And finally, two lower chest pockets, for me that means one for dog treats, one stuffed with gels or gummy clusters.ย Plus a divider in the large back pocket to keep everything separate.

Available in 5 sizes meant that this pack actuallyย fit my x-small frame with no gaps at the bottom, it was snug enough to not bounce without needing to tighten every strap down the maximum amount, and I was finally able to get bungee straps across the chest to fit.ย

Specs

  • Sizes XS-XL
  • Hydration: two 500ml soft flasks
  • Bladder Compatibility: yes, a compartment in the back
  • Available 2 color
  • Storage capacity: 10L
  • Check it out from Rei.com for $159

What’s the Difference Between Hydration Vest vs. Hydration Pack?

You might be wondering what the difference is between a hydration vest and a hydration pack. Honestly, I had the same question at first.

The two are often used interchangeably, but there is a small difference.

A hydration vest fits snug against your body and is lightweight, which helps reduce bounce while you’re running. You’ll usually see bottles in the front, making it easy to grab a drink without slowing down.

A hydration pack, on the other hand, is more like a small backpack with a hydration bladder and tube. These tend to offer more storage for things like gels, layers, or extra gear, which can make them a good option for longer trail runs and ultras.

Like any other piece of clothing or piece of gear, the best running vest is one that fits your body and meets your needs. There is no single โ€˜most comfortableโ€™ vest, as what suits one runner may not fit another properly, or may not fit your body.

Iโ€™ve never worn a hydration vest or belt but have been shopping and canโ€™t find a comfortable alternative
    – belts with bottles on the side interfere with my arm swing
    – the ones with an angled bottle in the back poke me in the back
    – tried S and M vests (Iโ€™m a 32D) but all cut into my shoulder/neck when tightened sufficiently to prevent jostling

I feel like lack of hydration is limiting my training mileage to half marathon distance
