I’ve tried on many pairs of “casual walking shoes” over the past few years in search of something that doesn’t scream “RUNNING SHOE!” – that’s why I was excited to give the Allbirds Tree Dasher 2 a try!
After wearing them walking, for errands, and traveling, I’d say they stand out as a strong walking shoe contender. If you’re someone who values sustainability and is looking for a versatile daily trainer, this might be for you!
One of the best things about running shoes for walking is when you find that pair which could go on vacation with you to squeeze in a little run or just to wear all day long.
Who Is It Good For?
Who is the Allbird Tree Dasher 2 good for? Let’s break it down with some common categories.
- Walking Workouts: The shoe is lightweight, the upper is incredibly breathable, and the outsole provides plenty of traction, no matter the surface!
- Wide Feet: They do not come in wide but are very spacious!
- Standing All Day: For those who prefer firm support and traction when on their feet all day. The midsole may be too firm for some, especially if you are used to super-plush, high-stack height running shoes.
- Everyday Wear: Comfortable and sleek to complement either athletic or casual outfits
While I wouldn’t necessarily run many miles in these, they’re a great shoe for those who live an active life and strongly value sustainability: running errands, traveling, and standing at your desk.
Allbirds Tree Dasher 2 Overview
These shoes serve as excellent daily trainers and walking footwear, particularly if you prioritize sustainability: the entire shoe comprises sustainable materials!
It was interesting to learn the variety of materials used. The upper, midsole, outsole, eyelets, laces, insole, and heel lining all utilize sustainable materials such as eucalyptus tree fiber, recycled plastic bottles, and merino wool!
Another great feature of these shoes is how breathable the sock-fit upper is and how easily it collapses down. This is fantastic if you’re traveling and need to pack them in a suitcase (like I had to!) – they don’t hold the rigid shape that most running shoe uppers do, making them ultra-portable.Something I immediately noticed when unboxing the Allbirds Tree Dasher 2 is how it blurs the line between casual and athletic.
I love how the aesthetic of the shoe can transition from a casual office setting to errands to light workouts. It also felt like it could tackle a lot of different terrains, with a stable feel and a LOT of traction that exceeded my expectations!
However, for those of us who are used to max cushioned running shoes, the insole, and midsole might feel a bit too firm, especially if you are looking for a plush ride from your walking shoe. This shoe seems to excel in providing a reliable and stable experience that can be used both in the gym and walking around every day.

Allbirds Tree Dasher 2 Fit
I have pretty standard feet—not particularly wide or narrow—and these felt comfortable and spacious all day! The sock fit was a unique experience – it truly feels like the shoe is wrapping around your foot.
Consider sizing up a half-size, especially if you’re between sizes or prefer thicker socks. The eyelet lacing was a bit tricky, making it challenging to get that “locked-down” feeling typical in traditional running shoes. But the upper being a sock fit did make up for that with its snug fit.
Talking about the upper, the breathability is top-notch – I could feel the wind through the upper on breezy days!
However, this shoe does feel a bit short when it comes to length. I’d consider sizing up by a half size, especially if you’re in between sizes like me, or if you plan to wear thicker socks with this shoe – as the sock fit can be very snug.
Allbirds Tree Dasher 2 Feel
As soon as I put the Allbirds Tree Dasher 2 on, I immediately noticed two things: the snugness of the sock fit, and the traction of the outsole.
I’d never worn a sock-fit shoe before, so the sensation was different than anything I’d ever felt before. It truly felt like my foot was wrapped in a sock! If you’re someone looking for an easy-to-pull-on shoe, this will fit the bill. Just be sure to make sure your socks also fit snugly! The grippy outsole reminded me of my healthcare days when non-slip shoes were crucial.
These provide significantly more traction than my previous favorite walking sneakers, making them perfect for unpredictable conditions. I can see these coming in handy for long days when you don’t know exactly what conditions you might come across.
Finally, the last thing I immediately noticed was how firmly cushioned this shoe was. Putting them on during marathon training (where I’m wearing a lot of max-cushioned, plush shoes) was a shock, but not a bad one! These provide a firm, stable base if you have a long day of errands ahead of you.
Similar Shoes to Allbirds Tree Dasher 2
Not sure if these are the walking shoes for you? Here are some other ones we’d recommend:
- On Cloudtilt – Similar moderate cushion, but great for style and all day comfort
- Lululemon Beyondfeel – A nice lightweight shoe great for 3-6 mile runs and all day standing.
- Brooks Ghost – If you really want that running shoe option, it’s less stylish but better for being able to walk around and run too.
