Women’s running shoes aren’t just smaller men’s shoes. They’re designed differently, and it matters. Here are our team’s picks for best women’s running shoes (and the why behind the design!).
No rule says you have to wear a men’s or women’s shoe; you can absolutely swap if the size matches. BUT… it might not feel as comfortable underfoot, and over time, your gait could become unbalanced.
That’s because shoes aren’t just about the size; they’re designed with a few key features that account for the anatomical differences between male and female feet.
Women’s shoes tend to have a narrower heel, often a narrower midfoot, a bit more room in the toebox, and often use slightly softer cushioning. It’s often described as our feet being more triangular.
They’re also designed with biomechanics in mind, like a larger Q Angle (the angle from hip to knee), which means many women’s shoes include added arch support, midfoot stability, or more flexibility up front to keep your stride feeling smooth and comfortable.

The bottom line: the right women’s shoe isn’t just a smaller men’s model; it can make running feel a whole lot better.

Most of the brands on this list make shoes for both men and women, but we’ve also included one that’s shaking things up by designing shoes just for women (sorry, fellas!). Ryka was actually founded by a woman who set out to create shoes built around the unique needs of women’s bodies.
Ryka’s “game-changing tech is based on the ‘Q Angle’, the inside angle of the quadriceps muscle that is 3-4% greater in women than men, which impacts a woman’s stance and weight distribution on her feet.”

This research study found that a good, cushioned daily trainer usually helps even things out, but women are also more sensitive to changes in stiffness, cushioning, and fit.
We love seeing more women-focused brands entering the running space, and we’re excited to share gear designed with women’s bodies in mind.
Got a favorite brand you think we should check out? Send it our way, we’d love to hear about it.
10 Best Women’s Running Shoes
A reminder that the best shoe is always going to be the one that feels best for you. There’s a study that proves this! But we hope seeing some options from different brands gives you a place to start.
Each of these utilize a specific women’s shoe last (mold) to help with the heel and toe box fit. And with a team of 10 female running coaches around here, we’ve put in a lot of miles to help make these selections.
Best All Around Daily Trainer – Asics Novablast 5
Asics is one of the brands that you’re going to find a range of widths and even a good handful of more narrow fits. While there are so many good models to pick from, the Novablast 5 is going to be the best all around trainer.
The 5 has a full length midsole with their FF Blast Max foam. This shoe is a more responsive cushion that you’re not going to sink into as much.
We really like this level of cushion for every runner. It’s going to hold up for LONG runs and lots of daily miles.
While this is a neutral shoe, with no guiderails or anything for stability, it absolutely has some of that built into the design. The width of the platform from toe to heel reduces pronation and provides a really good ride.
- Weight: 7.9 oz women’s
- Heel toe drop: 8mm
- Not available in wide
- Available in eight colors
- Available at Asics.com for $160

Most Versatile Workout Shoe – Ryka Podflow
This is our first featured shoe from Ryka, featuring its unique Ryka Q Technology, which is based on the Q Angle.
This is going to be truly a shoe that you can grab for anything: running, HIIT classes, running errands or even run/walk intervals.
The midsole is made of ACTIVenergy™ translucent EVA foam, which offers a soft and responsive midsole cushioning. The pods along the sole of the shoe also offer targeted support for each part of the foot while promoting natural motion.
The heel has a nice rocker, and the pod along the arch feels a bit firmer, which helps promote a natural feeling motion while exercising.
These shoes feel more stable than squishy, yet they did not make my feet ache after wearing them all day.

Best Stability Shoe- Brooks Glycerin 22
The Glycerin remains one of Brooks most loved running shoes! It‘s a great all–around running shoe, providing great cushioning for a variety of running distances.
Brooks slightly changed things and use their DNA tuned foam underfoot. This EVA foam is the most durable and allows for a lot of softness. With their DNA tuned technology they can change the softness in different areas of the shoe based on usage type. In this case, a go to daily trainer.
If you’re someone who tends to deal with bunions or other issues needing a little extra space in the toe box, the Glycerin is a solid pick. You’ll have enough room plus the upper is made from a flexible mesh to accommodate a wider fit or different toe shapes.
Despite all the cushion, the shoe remains fairly light at 9 oz and has a 10mm heel drop, encouraging speed and comfort.
If you’re needing a wider fit, this model comes in both wide and extra wide!
- Weight: 9.1 oz Women’s
- Heel Drop: 10 mm
- Available in 9 colors
- Available in Medium, Wide and Extra Wide (wide and extra wide widths available in select colors)
- Available on brooksrunning.com for $165

Best for a Wider Fit- Hoka Bondi 9
The Bondi is always one of our go-to options for a solid shoe, whether you’re running or walking. The recent update has kept this one at the top of our lists because it’s a shoe that’s going to feel good from start to finish.
We have to admit the last model broke our hearts a little but we absolutely love the Bondi 9’s firmer and smoother feel. You aren’t going to feel like you’re sinking into the shoe, especially if you plan to wear it for a long time. Which is good news for your lower back!!
You’ll find more wiggle room in the toebox and a narrow(ish) fit in the midfoot for a more comfortable fit depending on your foot shape.
Even with all that cushioning, the Bondi 9 still manages to feel lightweight, which is a huge win for a shoe this plush.
The Bondi also comes in wide and extra wide so there are plenty of options available.
- Weight: 9.3 oz Women’s
- Heel Drop: 5 mm
- Usage: Easy runs, long runs, easily up to marathon distance
- 6 colors
- Available in wide
- Available on Hoka.com for $170

Best Max Cushion- New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 V14
Our team uses these in the regular width as a go-to daily trainer. What we like here is that the 6mm heel drop prevents pushing the knee forward, and the cushion is just lovely.
Coach Amanda has actually gone through 3 pairs of these shoes in the last few years. And Coach Stacey currently has 2 pairs ready to add into her rotation!
The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 is just a winner for our team, finding it to do well for high mileage without breaking down.
New Balance often offers its shoes in different widths (narrow, standard, wide, and x-wide). So, depending on what type of foot shape you have, you’re likely to find the best fit for you.
That taller stack height provides a slightly wider base and more stability without in anyway being a stability shoe.
- Weight: 10.5oz Men’s, 8.3 oz Women’s
- Heel Drop: 6mm
- 8 colors
- Available in narrow, standard, wide and extra wide depending on the color
- Available on NewBalance.com for $165

Best Lightweight Option- On Cloudsurfer 2
The fit of On shoes tends to be more narrow, especially in the heel and midfoot. While sometimes a narrower fit isn’t ideal, it’s actually helpful when it comes to women’s shoes because it almsot mimics that triangle shape we mentioned above.
Cloudsurfer 2 is a moderate cushioned, lower stack height, running shoe for shorter easy runs that’s also high on our list of great walking shoes.
At 9oz, the Cloudsurfer 2 is lightweight but feels supportive enough to protect you through a variety of runs. It balances performance with weight in a way that makes this a reliable, smooth trainer.
For a daily trainer, these have the right amount of energy return and cushion while feeling breathable and secure on your feet. The cushioned midsole of these shoes isn’t overly plush, which does feel like a departure from prior Cloudsurfer models. The changes to this shoe’s midsole still feel extremely comfortable.
- Weight: 7.9 oz women’s, 9.2 oz men’s
- Heel drop: 9mm
- Available in 4 colors
- Available at On Running for $160

Best for Speed Work- Saucony Speed 5
This is a shoe that’s going to feel good from the very first run, no break-in period needed!
The Endorphin Speed 5 fits true to size and actually gives you a little more wiggle room in the toebox compared to the previous version, which was a welcome upgrade.
That roomier feel comes from the new engineered mesh upper. It’s lighter, more breathable, and a whole lot less restrictive than what we saw in the Speed 4. The goal was to drop some weight, and it feels like Saucony delivered without sacrificing comfort.
Again, this is a shoe that sometimes may get a rap for being a little narrow. But as we’ve noted, that’s ideal if you’re looking for a shoe designed with a woman’s foot shape in mind!
It’s a solid pick for interval workouts, tempo runs, and anything fast-paced. But Saucony also built it with enough cushioning and durability to carry you through longer training runs, too, making it a pretty versatile option to have in your rotation.
- Weight: 8.1 oz Women’s
- Heel drop: 8 mm
- Stack height: 36 mm
- Available in X colors
- Not available in wide
- Available from Saucony.com for $170

Women’s Trail Shoe Merrell Antora 4
This trail shoe from Merrell was designed specifically for women giving more room upfront in the toebbox and then tapering for a more narrow fit in the forefoot and heel.
The FloatPro™ Foam midsole was cushioned enough on the trails, but still had the ground feel I always crave. It was a great balance for shorter runs.
These are absolutely going to be more of moderate trail or perhaps even just a great hiking shoe! And 100% we recommend trail running shoes for hiking.
- Weight: 7.7 oz Women’s (women-specific fit!)
- Heel drop: 8mm
- 9 colors
- Available wide and waterproof
- Available at Merrell.com for $130

Best Road to Trail Shoe – Altra Experience Wild 2
Altra is another brand that’s designed for women with it’s FIT4HER™ technology.
Altra designs its women’s shoes with a narrower heel, longer arch, and unique metatarsal spacing to better accommodate women’s feet. This means they are narrower through the midfoot and heel.
The Experience Wild 2 will still have the foot-shaped toe box and a wider forefoot that you’re used to finding with the Altra brand. The only difference here is the 4mm heel drop.
If you want to try out zero-drop shoes but are nervous to make a huge jump, this is a good in-between option!
You will find lugs on the bottom of these to help with traction but they’re not going to be super noticeable if you’re running a mix of roads and trails.
It strikes that perfect balance between lightweight and cushioned….all while still giving you some of that ground feel like you would in a traditional zero drop.
- Weight: 10.35 oz Men’s, 8.8 oz Women’s
- Heel Drop: 4 mm
- 7 colors available
- Not available in wide
- Available on Altrarunning.com for $140
- Check out our full review of the Altra Experience Wild 2 here >>
There are honestly so many more shoes that we could add to this list of the best women’s running shoes. But for now, we hope that maybe you’ve found a pair that catches your eye.
