If youโve ever tried to balance an ice pack on your knee or shoulder, you already know my biggest complaint about icing an injury. Itโs annoying.
I was witnessing this process firsthand as my husband recently broke his collarbone in 3 places mountain biking. Day 1, the weight of an ice pack wasn’t even doable, nor was he going to hold it in place. So TheraIce basically showed up at the best possible time for us to truly put it to the test.
Within a few hours post-surgery, he had on the Shoulder sleeve, an ankle wrap, and, why not, throw one on his foot for the long-standing issue I believe to be Plantar Fasciitis that he won’t get checked out. We’re going to dive into all the details below of how it works, etc., but I can tell you already this household will be using them for a long time.
Who is it Good For?

TheraIce Overview
TheraIce makes a pretty large collection of products, but the basic idea is very simple: take traditional hot or cold therapy and put it into something that actually conforms to your body. Some sleeves provide both heat and cold, while the PRO models are specifically designed for cold therapy.
The gel is built into the sleeve, which means youโre getting contact around much more of the joint or muscle instead of placing one small ice pack over a single spot. Seriously, this is very different than putting on a stiff ice pack. It really can fully encompass an area.
Which, of course, is why David immediately found so much more relief with the Shoulder Sleeve covering his full collarbone post-surgery, staying in place and not needing any hands to keep it there!
Ease of use is basically 100%; there’s no learning curve.ย Keep it in the plastic bag provided or your own, put it in the freezer, and then, when you’re ready to use, pull it out and slide, snap, or Velcro it in place!
That being said, it’s COLD. So if you aren’t putting it on over clothing, you might let it sit out for 10 minutes or so to warm up a little bit. With the wrist and foot sleeve, I found we wanted it to sit out for a bit where he put the shoulder strap on over a shirt immediately.
The brand says its gel and insulation maintain temperature for up to about 20 minutes, which also happens to be plenty of time for most cold therapy sessions. But in truth, I think they stay colder much longer than that!
And of course, I happen to be the queen of using heat on tight muscles. It feels good, it gets me to relax, and it’s considered helpful for recovery. So instead of trying to conform a 3-foot heating pad to a knee, I can put the Anysleeve in the microwave, and then wrap it around!
Do We Need to Ice Injuries?
Now here’s a new twist: in recent years, we started hearing that RICE was no longer the go-to. True, but also not the entire story.
As a running coach, Iโve talked a lot about the fact that weโve moved away from the idea that we should ice every ache and pain. Inflammation is part of the bodyโs natural healing process, so our goal isnโt necessarily to shut it down every time something hurts.
But that doesnโt mean ice is useless.
Cold therapy can be really helpful for pain relief management, especially immediately after an injury. A 2024 review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that pain relief is the clearest supported benefit of cryotherapy and suggested it may be useful during roughly the first six hours after an acute injury.
Orthopedic surgeons are also still asking patients to ice post-surgery and often pre-surgery to get the swelling down enough to move forward. But beyond that, if icing means that you can go to work, go to sleep, or move around more comfortably, then go for it.ย
The flip side is that heat may be the best friend you’ve overlooked!
Heat helps increase blood flow to the area, and for tight muscles, it just helps you relax.

TheraIce Cold Shoulder Wrap PRO Review
Price: $39.99
Best for:ย Dealing with an upper body injury like the shoulder, or collarbone this is a million times easier to keep in place and you can easily move around while wearing it.
I wasn’t originally thinking much about the shoulder wrap for a running gear review. Then my mountain bike-loving husband broke his collarbone, and I quickly learned why the TheraIce design is so invaluable.
The Cold Shoulder Wrap PRO is designed to fit either the left or right shoulder and is shaped to keep cold therapy around the shoulder rather than making you hold an ice pack against it.
He had 2 days of trying unsuccessfully to use a regular ice pack when the Shoulder Wrap arrived, and he’s now used it daily since surgery, with a lot of mentions that it’s “so freaking much easier and feels so much better”.
And while collarbone fractures aren’t exactly a running injury, trail runners absolutely take falls and end up with upper body injuries too. Plus, runners still lift weights, bike, ski, and do plenty of other activities that occasionally remind us we are not invincible.
IMPORTANT: A broken collarbone is obviously not something we’re treating with an ice sleeve. That’s an injury that needs proper medical care, and we’re following his doctor’s instructions.
But cold is commonly used early after injuries to help manage pain, which gives us an interesting opportunity to see how easy this wrap actually is compared with trying to balance an ice pack across the shoulder.
TheraIce AnySLEEVE Review
Price: $29.99
Best Choice:ย You don’t have 1 chronic issue, but need an ice pack for random injuries and want something that would actually stay put on shin splints or an elbow. Also ideal if you know that heat is a comforting choice for you too.
Of everything we tested, the AnySLEEVE might make the most sense if you donโt have one particular problem area or maybe if you have multiple problem areas (been there!). It’s also the option that will allow you to use it as a hot or cold pack.
Instead of being shaped specifically for the knee or ankle, it can be wrapped around the knee, elbow, calf, shin, or ankle. Thereโs an adjustable Velcro strap to hold it in position, and the whole sleeve can provide hot or cold therapy.
That versatility makes it a pretty solid starting point if you’re thinking, “Do I really need four different ice sleeves?” That being said, my husband has been using the ankle option on his wrist post-accident and finding it works just fine! So really you can make a lot of them multi-use.
This is also the one I could see throwing in the freezer and using whenever some random running ache pops up.
TheraIce Cold Ankle Compression Sleeve PRO Review
Price: $39.99
Best Choice:ย If you deal with sprained ankles, foot pain,ย Plantar Fasciitis, this is going to stay put more comfortably and envelop the area rather than moving around a single ice pack.
The Ankle Sleeve PRO slides on like a sock and provides cold around the entire ankle and heel of the foot. The gel sleeve also provides a light compression, helping it stay in place, and it comes in Small/Medium, Large, and X-Large sizes to best fit you.
My husband is currently dealing with what we suspect may be plantar fasciitis, so I’ve been asking him to throw it on nightly while also icing his collarbone. Because he’s an engineer, I quickly found that he was using this sleeve on his wrist after the bike accident as well. So good news, it’s very versatile.
Once again, we aren’t looking to ice to heal his PF, but to give some relief while he works towards a resolution. With his extremely flat feet, I’m also getting him doing more foot and calf strengthening because THAT is the kind of thing that matters long term.
But pain relief also means that he’s able to go to sleep at night. Win.
TheraIce Cold Knee Compression Sleeve PRO Review
Price: $39.99
Best Choice:ย If you’re dealing with joint pain, knee surgery or an initial injury the fit of this sleeve is so much better at allowing you to get the cold therapy where you want it and relax.
I’ve spent enough time dealing with my own knee issues over the years to know that icing the knee with a traditional ice pack is particularly irritating.
Do you put it on top of the kneecap? Underneath? Along the side?
And then the second you move, the ice pack falls off.
The Knee Sleeve PRO solves the logistical problem by surrounding the knee with cold and compression. TheraIce says its FocusZone design is intended to provide more targeted cooling and pressure around the joint.
This is a cold-only model, which is important to note because TheraIce also makes a less expensive Hot & Cold Knee Compression Sleeve for $29.99.
So if you specifically want heat too, pay attention to which version you’re buying.
Just remember that feeling better after 20 minutes of cold doesn’t mean an injury is healed.
Use these for what they do really well: helping manage pain and making hot or cold therapy ridiculously easy.
Then keep doing the strength work, rehab, and smart training that actually gets you back to running.
Our Verdict
Who knew the old, outdated ice pack could be improved in such a simple and cost-effective way! The comfort, shape, design, and ease of use have made the TheraIce products a must-have in our house now, and I’d recommend them to anyone with an active family.
