In that first post, I talked all about what transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation does, who should use it and why. Today I’m talking more about the specific at home TENS unit I used and my thoughts on how it worked.

30 days ago, I took on a challenge to test out the Omron Avail and find out just how well TENS works for pain relief. While I am not someone who suffers from chronic pain, it’s not unusual for something to hurt with all the training!

Let’s start from the top…if you didn’t read my first post on what is TENS, go there! omrom review

Set Up

One of the reason, I often don’t follow through with new gadgets is because I get overwhelmed thinking about the time it’s going to take to set up or learn.

That was not the case here.

1. Charge.
2. Download app.
3. Place on body and let’s go.

Truly the app makes everything extremely easy, it gives you suggested uses and allows you to consistently control the intensity throughout the usage. And guiding you through the no, no’s too!omron availPlacing the pads is really easy. You peel off the clear sticker and there’s a gel substance similar too if you’ve ever had an ultrasound.

This allows you to apply it to the skin, but doesn’t not result in hair being ripped off when you remove it! Not so much an issue for me, but I wanted my dad to try it on his back and that was something he asked about before agreeing!

It says that each pad should be good for 30 uses, but mine still seem like they’re in good shape and could go longer. The unit comes with 2 TENS unites and then a smaller and larger pad which you can select based on where you’re placing the applicator and what you’re trying to activate.

The Omron App

This was super easy to use and provided some great instructions as well, which is part of what helps to make this easily portable! No wires, the charge lasts a long time and the control is your phone.

TENS unit app

After placing the pads, you can use one of the per-programmed options or use a specific modality. Once you’ve selected an option you can:

  • adjust the time
  • adjust the intensity
  • quickly change the program without restarting the timer

My Results

As noted, I’ve had the unit for a month now and used it on a number of different things!omron avail reviewShoulders
It’s not uncommon for me to have a lot of shoulder tension and even after visiting the chiropractor it remained, so I told him I had this TENS unit at home. He was thrilled! I have used it a number of times and each time, it seems to simply force the muscles to let go and relax. The result is that it has also stopped headaches and of course it just feels better.

Hip
I have a knot or area of tension in my left glute/hip and while I have dug in to it with my PT ball repeatedly, it was time to try something else. Again I found it really useful to release some tension and it definitely relieved the pain.

While it’s not a cure all and you need to find the root cause, it’s a great tool! Tension and tight muscles are a huge cause of pain, so why not utilize a drug free option to help!

Awesome review!! I use estim sometimes at the Denver Sports Recovery center. Great to know I could buy an at home version if ever needed. But hopefully I’ll stay injury free!
