In 2002 I started running and assumed it was basically just trying to run a little bit farther each day, rinse, wash, repeat. It was cotton t-shirts, a Timex watch and honestly pretty darn uncomplicated!

But the truth is I also missed out on a lot by not starting my journey of learning some basics sooner. Luckily for you, I’ve now coached thousands of runners over a decade and continue to hone my own joy of running even two decades later.Running for heart healthTrust me, it’s not as hard as you think.

Let’s see where we can help you get started and put some miles on those shoes instead of running around in your brain.

There are over 2000 articles around here from gear reviews to training tips, so make sure to use that little search icon in the top right to find answers.

Running Resources to Get Started

Whether you are new to running or a seasoned vet a few things will always remain the same…time required to stay injury free and the desire for motivation to achieve new running goals.

  • How to Start Running When You’re Out of Shape
  • Understanding Heart Rate Zones (the ever talked about easy Zone 2)
  • Understanding the Galloway Run Walk Method of Training
  • Bodyweight Exercises for Runners (an easy place to start making strength a priority)
  • Walk a Half Marathon Program
Don’t be afraid to work with a coach!

An online running group allows you the solo runs you crave with the support of other runners and a coach to guide you through those YIKES moments.

Fuel Like A Runner

Step 2 is you gotta start thinking about food differently. One of the greatest gifts that running gave me was to start thinking about what I could add in to feel better, rather than what foods to take out.

I fully understand some of you are starting out with a focus on running for weight loss. I did too! Hence why I keep telling you that you have to start strength training!!! But you also still need to learn how to fuel.

  • Protein for Runners  – yessss you need it, not just carbs, especially for muscle building
  • Best Electrolyte Powder – this is going to help you hydrate
  • Best Pre-Workout Snacks – eating before is going to help you go longer and recover better
  • Manage Marathon Training Hunger – it’s so real!

Gear Up

Yup, we do a lot of gear reviews around here and that can be overwhelming. So let’s pick a few areas that are going to be most beneficial when starting.

  • Best Cushioned Running Shoes
  • Best Running Watch (we’ll cover entry level to the top tier)
  • Best Running Socks (OMG it’s a purchase you won’t regret)
  • How to Find Affordable Running Gear
