Remember when we were kids and people would tell us that our new shoes made us look fast? It’s time to bring that feeling back. The Altra Mont Blanc Speed doesn’t just look fastโ€”it makes me feel fast.ย ย

Altra Mont Blanc Speed OverviewThe Mont Blanc Speed lives up to its nameโ€”itโ€™s designed for speed and motivates me to push harder with every stride. The sleek design, particularly the faded green accents on the midsole, gives it a fast look. Perhaps the warm spring weather is inspiring me, but it feels like the shoes themselves are encouraging me to run a little faster.

Altra is known for its zero drop, roomy toe box, and overall comfort, and the Mont Blanc Speed delivers all of that in a more lightweight package.

Who Is It Good For?

Who is the Altra Mont Blanc Speed a good fit for, let’s break it down by some common categories:

  • Wide Feet: Yes! Altra’s signature footbed style is extra roomy
  • Heavier Runners: Yup! The high cushion brings all the comfort
  • Long Runs: These are made to go the distance, whatever that is!
  • Front of the Pack: Every part of the pack will love the lightweight speed this shoe offers

This shoe is great for anyone wanting room for their toes to wiggle and a high cushion without sacrificing speed. It’s a great race-day shoe for less technical trail races.ย

Altra Mont Blanc Speed Cushion

Altra Mont Blanc Speed Overview

The first thing I noticed was how light they felt when I put them on. Compared to road shoes, trail shoes are usually on the heavier side, but these struck a balance between being light enough to feel the difference and still offering that signature Altra comfort.

One of the trade-offs to keep them light is the slightly less aggressive lugs compared to other trail shoes.

While this means they aren’t as grippy on the toughest, most technical terrain, they still provide enough traction for many of the trails I run. They shine on smoother, less technical trails and gravel roads. If you’re looking for a lightweight, high-performance trail shoe that gives you that speed boost without sacrificing comfort, the Mont Blanc Speed is worth checking out.

Altra Mont Blanc Speed Fit

I know I said these shoes look fast and make me want to run fast, but what’s inside the Mont Blanc Speed that makes me want to pick up the pace? Quite a few things, actually! Let’s break it down:

First, with its unique rim and core construction, the performance-focused midsole is lightweight yet incredibly responsive. The Altra EGOโ„ข MAX in the rim adds that extra layer of comfort, while the Altra EGOโ„ข PRO foam in the core keeps things quick and bouncy with a fast rebound.Altra Mont Blanc Speed Foam

The Vibramยฎ Litebase outsole helps reduce weight while the Vibramยฎ Megagrip ensures I stay grounded on uneven terrain. The stitch-and-turn collar and tongue construction cuts out extra bulk and chafing potential.

I was happily surprised to find they included a TPU StoneGuard. Often, shoes leave that out to save on weight, but Altra found a way to include it without weighing it down. The insert protects my feet from rough, rocky terrain.

Altra Mont Blanc Speed Specs

  • Weight: 10.1 oz Men’s, 8.2 oz Women’s
  • Stack Height: 29 mm
  • Heel Drop: 0 mm
  • Available in Black/Lime Colors
  • Not available in wide
  • Available on Altrarunning.com for $185

Whether cruising through a quick tempo run or flying down a trail, the Mont Blanc Speed makes me feel fast and confident.

In a time when running shoes seem to look like highlighters, I appreciate that this one is mostly black with pops of bright lime. It is still bright but not overwhelmingly so.

Altra Mont Blanc Speed Feel

Altra Mont Blanc Speed Fitย

If you’ve ever tried on an Altra shoe, you’re familiar with the brand’s signature wide-toe box. When I first tried on a pair, I’ll admit, it felt more like a slipper than a traditional running shoe. But as I spent more time in them, my feet adjusted to the extra space, and I came to appreciate the roomy toe box.Altra Mont Blanc Speed TrailAltra offers three different footbed widths: Original, Standard, and Slim. Each provides a spacious toe box while offering varying levels of tightness in the midfoot to accommodate various foot shapes.

The Mont Blanc Speed features Altra’s Standard FootShapeโ„ข toe box, which gives your toes plenty of room to spread out naturally while maintaining a secure fit in the midfoot for a balanced and comfortable ride.

The secure midfoot and well-padded tongue allowed me to tighten my laces without worrying about lace fatigue. The fit feels snug yet comfortable, and I appreciated the added sense of security in the midfoot.ย

In terms of sizing, I found the fit to be true to size. However, if you have narrow feet, I recommend trying them on first since the toe box is quite spacious. Some reviewers claim the Mont Blanc Speeds run big, but I didn’t find that true for my standard-shaped feet.ย

Altra Mont Blanc Speed Feel

Altra is also known for its zero-drop platform, which helps your feet stay in a neutral position. However, if you’re new to zero-drop shoes, it’s important to ease into them gradually to give your body time to adjust.

They offer four different levels of cushioning, and the Mont Blanc Speed falls into the second-highest category, providing a plush ride without compromising on performance.

On my long runs, I really felt the support and comfortโ€”my feet were cushioned, and the added TPU StoneGuardโ„ข kept me safe from sharp rocks underfoot. I didn’t feel any pressure points, which was a huge win for me on rough terrain.

But don’t let the high cushion fool you; it is still a quick-response shoe.

Altra found the balance between being comfortable and still providing a snappy shoe. The weight of the shoe helps with that. It’s much lighter than my other trail shoes and feels zippy.

If you are looking for even more zip, Altra makes a Mont Blanc Carbon, that includes a full length carbon plate!Altra Mont Blanc Speed ReviewThe trade-off, however, is in the lugs.

While the Mont Blanc Speed offers solid traction on most trails, it isn’t as aggressive as some other trail shoes, so it wouldn’t be my go-to for muddy or really technical trails. That said, it would also make an excellent road-to-trail shoe, bridging the gap between pavement and dirt.

I’ve worn these shoes for a variety of runsโ€”long runs, tempo sessions, and hill repeatsโ€”and they’ve been great all-around performers. For tempo and hill runs, I especially appreciated how lightweight and fast they felt. With a fast 50k on my calendar in April, the Mont Blanc Speed might be the shoe to help me cross the finish line.

Mont Blanc Speed vs Mont Blanc Carbon

The Altra Mont Blanc Speed and Mont Blanc Carbon are designed for you to have the best experience on the trails. But there are a few differences we think are important to point out if you’re on the fence, especially with the price difference.

  • Mont Blanc Carbon is little bit lighter (9.3 oz men’s, 7.7oz women’s)
  • Mont Blanc Speed is perfect as a daily trainer and long runs
  • Mont Blanc Carbon is for race days on the trails and even longer efforts
  • Mont Blanc Carbon has a little more cushioning, but still will provide the responsiveness you want for race day
  • Mont Blanc Speed has a more roomy fit, Mont Blanc Carbon provides a more secure, snug midfoot
  • Mont Blanc Carbon has a full-length Carbitex carbon plate that flexes when you need ground feel and stiffens when you need propulsion. In comparison to other plated shoes, this one assists your stride without over-correcting it.
  • Mont Blanc Carbon is pricier at $260

Similar Shoes to the Mont Blanc Speed

We’ve tested a few that feel similar but different based on the brand fit:

  • Hoka Speedgoat 6– Wide footbed, but a little less responsiveย
  • Topo Ultraventure 4– Similar footbed and wide toe box with a 5mm drop
  • Nike Pegasus Trail – Another option for road to trail speed

I usually think of running shoes for their function and practicality, but there’s something different about having a shoe that’s also just fun to wearโ€”and the Altra Mont Blanc Speed are my favorite “fun” shoes. From the sleek, speedy design to the bold accents, I can’t help but feel ready to go when I lace them up. These shoes are made for speed, and they make me feel fastโ€”it’s a perfect combination!

Who Tested It

Hi, Iโ€™m John, a 40-year-old runner who is passionate about pushing my limits. I played college basketball and coached high school basketball, but these days, Iโ€™ve traded the court for the trails, running races that range from 5Ks to 100 miles. The mountains are my favorite place to run; the rugged terrain and stunning views make every step worth it.

I also mix up my routine with cross-training, enjoying Nordic and backcountry skiing in the winter, and biking during the summer months. When Iโ€™m not running or adventuring outdoors, you can find me fly-fishing with my family.
