The ASICS Gel-Kayano 31 has been a go-to stability shoe for runners for decades. It’s on version 31, and that has to count for something, right? Let’s take a look at whether the subtle updates keep it in the running as a fan favorite.
Here’s the TL;DR on the Asics Gel-Kayano 31: it’s a reliable, comfort-focused stability shoe that continues to earn its spot on so many of our “best of” lists, for good reason.
Everyday runners will appreciate the Kayano’s sturdy feel, plush cushioning, and consistent support across any distance, whether you’re logging easy miles or going long.
Now, let’s dive into the details to see if this longtime favorite still deserves a spot in your rotation.
Who Is It Good For?
- Wide Feet: There’s a wide option available if you need a wider fit.
- Heavy Runner: A durable outsole will help extend the life of the shoe.
- Long Distance: Whether you’re running a 5k or a marathon, this shoe should handle any distance with ease
- Front of the Pack: It’s not going to be a shoe you grab to pick up the pace or run a PR. Keep it for easy, recovery efforts.
This is a great affordable daily trainer for beginner runners or those who want a shoe that’s versatile from easy days to long marathon training runs.
Asics Gel Kayano 31 Review
I’ve known about the Asics brand forever, but had no experience with any of their shoes before trying the Gel Kayano. Still, my impression of the brand was very “no frills.” Basically, what you see is what you get.
Wouldn’t you know it… that same impression definitely sums up my feelings about the Asics Gel-Kayano 31.
But that’s not a bad thing.
If you were a fan of the previous version, this one will feel just as good if not better. ASICS kept things familiar, making only subtle updates to the mesh upper, outsole, and heel for a slightly more refined fit and feel.
What stood out to me right away was the stability, thanks to the combination of PureGEL foam and the 4D Guidance System.
While I typically prefer a bouncier, softer foam, I really appreciated the Gel-Kayano’s sturdier feel. It gave me the sense that these could go the distance, maybe even 500+ miles.
As a heavier runner (185–190 lbs), most shoes in my rotation top out around 300 miles, so the potential for extra durability alone makes these worth keeping around.
I also noticed how steady my gait felt, which is a big deal for someone who overpronates. The 4D Guidance System actively pushed back against my foot just enough to keep things aligned without feeling restrictive.
Could that help prevent future injuries? I hope so because with a history of a broken foot and peroneal tendinitis, I value any extra support that helps me stay consistent and injury-free.
Between a good strength training routine and a reliable pair of shoes, I know I’m giving myself the best shot at running healthy for the long haul.

Asics Gel Kayano 31 Fit
The overall fit of the ASICS Gel-Kayano 31 is true to size, with just enough room in the toe box to accommodate a bit of swelling on longer runs. If you prefer extra space up front, the wide option is a solid choice.
One of the key updates in this version is the redesigned tongue and heel collar, which work together to keep your foot securely in place. That locked-in feel through the heel adds to the shoe’s stable ride and helps prevent any unwanted slipping.
The upper mesh also saw a small update in this version, though the jury is still out whether it was an improvement. The material feels a bit thicker than before, and several reviews have pointed out that it doesn’t breathe as well in warmer temps.
On the plus side, it’s a stretchier mesh, so it doesn’t feel overly tight or restrictive around your foot, allowing for a more adaptable fit.
Asics Gel Kayano 31 Feel
Everything about the Gel-Kayano 31 screams durability, and once you get through a short break-in period, the comfort really starts to shine.
This shoe is a total workhorse. It’s like that dependable friend who shows up early to help with yard work and doesn’t leave until everything’s done.
The more miles I put on it, the more I appreciated how solid it feels underfoot and how well it holds up no matter what terrain or distance I threw at it.
That said, I’m not setting any PRs in this shoe. It still looks and feels bulky, and the 11 oz weight is definitely noticeable if you try to pick up the pace.
The updated outsole adds noticeable grip and traction, especially on slick roads or light gravel, while the redesigned heel feels more structured and secure, with no slipping, just a locked-in fit that gives extra confidence with each step.
A shoe for daily runs, easy miles, and long outings where support and stability matter most, the Asics Gel-Kayano 31 gets the job done every time.

Who Tried It
Hi, I’m Justin Gardner, one of those “5k a day” runners you’ll find in the middle of the pack at your local Turkey Trot. I began my running journey over a decade ago when some coworkers wanted to enter a 5K race for charity, and I thought it’d be fun to join. Little did I know that my competitive side would kick in and I’d finish 11th in a 500 person race with a 5k time of 19:55.
After that, I was hooked, and my journey has led me to a lifelong love of getting out on the roads and trails of Missouri and Kansas.
