Based on reviews of the previous model, it looks like Mizuno listened to runner feedback and made some of the updates many of us were hoping for. But do those changes improve the Mizuno Wave Inspire 22? mizunoe inspire 22 reviewWhen I met with the Mizuno team at TRE at the end of last year, I was really excited to hear about the lineup of shoes coming in 2026, and the Wave Inspire 22 immediately caught my attention.

The updated design is definitely flashy and gives this stability trainer a look that makes you want to lace it up for plenty of miles.

The updates themselves were fairly minor, mostly focused on the upper mesh, midsole, and overall fit.

I hate to spoil things this early in the review, but my excitement faded a bit once I realized the changes to the fit may have been the biggest miss for me.

That said, as we always mention in our reviews, every shoe will feel different for each runner. Whether we’re raving about a model or it ends up living in the back of the closet, the only real way to know is to try it on for yourself.

What I can say is that when it comes to cushioning and stability, the Wave Inspire 22 still delivers.

Who is it Good For?

Who is the Mizuno Wave Inspire 22 a good fit for? Let’s break it down by some common categories:
 • Wide Feet: The regular runs a little narrow, but the good news is that there’s a wide option available!
 • Heavier runners: I question the foam’s durability for how long it will provide support. It was already showing signs of wear and tear after just 1-2 test runs.
 • Long Runs:ย Perfect for the sweet spot of half-marathon distance training because I’m worried the foam may lose some of its bounce and energy return.
 • Front of the pack: This is not going to be your race-day shoe; grab it for easy and recovery days.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 22 Overview

This stability shoe from Mizuno does things a little differently than many others out there.

Instead of using a traditional medial post, like you’ll see in shoes such as the New Balance 860, the Wave Inspire 22 uses Mizuno’s WAVE plate.

The plate helps spread the impact across a larger area of the shoe instead of just the inside edge. That design helps guide your stride and keep your foot from rolling in too much, while still feeling natural as you run.

As someone who tends to pronate, I really liked how the Inspire 22 worked with my stride.

The updated midsole uses nitrogen-infused Mizuno Energy NXT, which gives the shoe a good balance of cushioning with a little energy return.

It never felt overly soft, but there was still enough pop when I threw in a few strides during the middle of the end of a run.

I even noticed how the combination of the foam and wave plate helped support my foot when I was just standing or walking around. My plantar fascia definitely appreciated that extra stability.

That said, even though I can rave about how well it works as a stability shoe, I’m still a little on the fence about it, and that mostly comes down to the fit, which I’ll talk about more below.mizunoe inspire 22 review

If the 12mm heel drop in previous models felt a little too high for you, this update to 10mm may be a welcome change.

The Mizuno Wave Inspire 22 now has a 10 mm heel drop. It might not sound like a huge change, but even a couple of millimeters can make a difference in how a shoe feels on the run.

A lower heel drop can help reduce knee pain orย IT Band issues that often pop up inย newer runners.

Quick Take

Pros

 • MIZUNO WAVE plate helps to prevent pronation
 • Eco-friendly materials
 • Improved fun colorways + design

Cons

 • Concern with the fit and constant heel slipping
 • Narrower fit
 • Not sure about the foam’s durability

mizuno inspire 22 outsole

The outsole uses Mizuno’s X10 carbon rubber, placed in high-wear areas to improve durability. That part doesn’t worry me at all; it feels built to handle plenty of miles.

What did catch my attention, though, were the exposed sections of foam. Even after just walking around in them and heading out for a first run, I started noticing some wear showing up along those white foam areas.

Usually, this kind of “styrofoam-like” midsole takes a long time for those wrinkles to appear.

It makes me wonder how it will hold up over time, especially for heavier runners or those who tend to heel strike. Only more miles will really tell, come back in a few months for our 200 mile update.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 22 Fit

Overall, when I first slipped on the Mizuno Wave Inspire 22, they felt comfortable underfoot. But the place where this shoe falls short for me is the overall fit, especially around the heel.

No matter what I tried, even switching up the lacing, the back of my foot kept feeling like it was slipping out of the shoe. It reminded me of wearing leggings that you constantly have to pull up while running. Something just didn’t feel secure.

Compared to the previous model, the Inspire 22 has a more flared heel collar. While I do appreciate that it presents rubbing around the heel, it felt a little too loose for my liking.

I also noticed that regardless of which socks I wore, they kept sliding down during my runs. That’s definitely not ideal and could easily lead to blisters over time.ย mizuno inspire 22 heel collarMizuno shoes tend to run a bit narrow, though they usually offer a nice amount of space in the toe box, and that holds true here as well.

If you do need a little extra room, the good news is the Wave Inspire 22 is available in a wide option for both men’s and women’s sizes.

The upper for the 22’s was updated with a more breathable, flexible mesh that feels lighter and helps keep your feet comfortable over longer periods of wear.

For me, the fit issues around the heel aren’t a complete dealbreaker, but they do change how I’d use the shoe.

The Wave Inspire 22 will likely stay in my rotation for shorter runs under about 5-6 miles.

Similar Shoes to the Mizuno Wave Inspire 22

Weโ€™ve tested a few stability running shoes that feel similar but differ in brand fit.ย

 • Hoka Arahi – lower heel drop (8mm), uses an H-frame for stability
 • Brooks Adrenaline GTS – most similar for weight and heel drop, but a more comfortable/secure fit
 • Saucony Guide – lower heel drop (6mm), more cushioning feel underfoot and chunkier design

Our Verdict

85%

It was a tough call with the Wave Inspire 22 because of the fit and question with durability. But if you need a little extra support to prevent your foot from pronating, the combo of the wave plate and updated midsole hits the spot.
