While marathons and triathlons are performed as individuals, it takes a team to make it happen. One of the recurring themes I heard on day one in Kona with Timex from a variety of athletes is that their “team” is what keeps them going when they felt like stopping during a hard workout or what they will be thinking of on race day. This didn’t surprise me as it’s exactly how I feel about sharing things with you, my tribe! If I am training for a race then I openly share the highs and the lows, but there are definitely workouts where I’d probably throw in the towel if I didn’t have to come share it with all of you. This morning Dorothy {MilePosts.com} had US as a tribe when she took her first ever open water swim and was terrified! But we kept her going and she kept thinking about sharing it with everyone as well! Together we made it out to the swim up coffee bar and back to shore in one piece…amidst many phenomenal athletes. Photo captions: Espresso bar sign on ocean floor; looking up at swim up coffee bar, our attempt at an underwater photo…hilarious!
The benefits of a team are also why Michele and I created the 10K Training Club last month. We realized that this formation of a team to provide support, encouragement and accountability is what helps drive us towards our goals. Plus it’s a lot of fun to have a group of people who understand exactly what you are going through!
Even if you don’t have a team of people that you train with you probably still have a tribe that supports your efforts…if you don’t, then let’s make that happen! The Holiday Challenge is coming and the 10K Club is coming back in January…find your tribe and let them lift you up when it gets tough.
Do you have a tribe? A team?
