rabbit is best known for its running apparel, where small but thoughtful details, like watch windows and ponytail openings, show a clear understanding of how runners actually move. That same attention to detail carries over into their footwear, and the High Country trail shoe feels like a natural extension of the brand.

rabbit High Country Reviewrabbitโ€™s High Country shoe looks ready for anything, with a rugged outsole, substantial cushioning, and a silhouette that suggests all-day comfort.

Designed as a max-cushioned trail shoe for long runs, technical terrain, and variable conditions, it blends protection and responsiveness with a locked-in feel that keeps me confident on steep, loose, and wet trails.

I tested the High Country on rocky terrain, long climbs, and fast descents. Even though the fit wasnโ€™t perfect for my foot, the shoe proved itself to be a stable, highly capable option for runners who want both cushion and control over long miles.

Who Is It Good For?

Who is rabbit High Country a good fit for? Letโ€™s break it down with some common categories:
  • Wide feet: Not ideal. Despite how it looks, the upper runs narrow.
  • Technical trails: Yes! It has excellent grip and protection.
  • Long runs: You bet! It is designed for extended efforts.
  • Front of the pack: Itโ€™s not purely built for speed, but this shoe can do it all, over all the miles.

This shoe is great for runners who want a protective, comfortable shoe for long distances and technical terrain. It may fit a narrow foot better; try sizing up if you have wider feet.

rabbit High Country Overview

The High Country is built around a cushion that doesnโ€™t feel overly bulky or too soft; it feels a lot like a Hoka Speedgoat. And with a 38mm heel and 33mm forefoot stack, thereโ€™s plenty of protection for long run days, but it doesnโ€™t feel like overkill on shorter runs.

rabbit High Country OverviewThe midsole uses rabbitโ€™s Flowstate Foam, the same foam found in the Dream Chaser road shoe, and I thought it translated really well to the trail. It feels lightweight and energetic without being too soft, soaking up impact on my long descents while still giving me a little help when I want to move faster.

To add stability, rabbit includes two small Carbon Trax plates tucked between the Flowstate foam and a secondary EVA layer. They are separated, so the shoe doesn’t feel too stiff.

I was impressed by how it all works together to create a smooth, comfortable ride thatโ€™s responsive when I pick up the pace.

Traction comes from the rabbitโ€™s proprietary 360 GRIP outsole, which uses strategically placed lugs to provide grip in almost every direction. Whether I was running through dry dirt, loose gravel, wet rock, or mixed terrain, the outsole felt reliable, and I really noticed the stability on my technical downhill sections.

I LOVE both of the color schemes. While bold colors dominate the trail shoe world, the High Countryโ€™s more natural palette is refreshing.

Quick Take

Pros
  • Responsive ride
  • Protective stability
  • Super grippy
Cons
  • Runs narrow and no wide option
  • Shorter laces – not able to heel lock

rabbit High Country Fit

Despite its appearance, the High Country is not as wide as it looks. I found the upper narrow, particularly through the laces. There was enough room in the toe box, but I could never quite get the upper as loose as I wanted.

rabbit High Country LacesUnfortunately, the overall fit felt too tight for my foot shape. However, that is good news for those with a narrower midfoot. This might be their ideal fit.

After comparing notes with other runners, and based on my own experience, it would be worth trying on a 1/2 or full size up to see if that helps.

Iโ€™ve never had a pair of shoes that came with two insoles, and that was really intriguing to me. I have had my feet slide around in shoes on hefty downshills, but never considered needing a more grippy insole. Rabbit seems to think it can help, and after trying their Zonal Grip insole, I do too.

rabbit High Country Zonal GripThe Blumaka Non-Slip Konnect insole with Zonal Grip technology does what it says: it kept my foot planted with zero slippage during my climbs and descents. Rabbit also includes a standard EVA insole, so if you donโ€™t need or like the Zonal Grip, you can easily swap it out.

The upper is quick-drying and breathable, made with 60% recycled mesh and perforations that help with airflow. I didnโ€™t run through any creek crossings, but I did run through plenty of snow, and I was impressed with how well my feet stayed dry even with the perforations.

And when my feet were finally soaked from the snow (slush), the upper dried quickly, so I have high hopes for summer when I encounter water crossings.

rabbit High Country InstepThe laser-cut gusseted tongue is padded, and I didnโ€™t experience any digging in despite it being tight on my foot. The heelโ€™s cushioned collar was also comfortable.

Although I did experience some heel movement, the laces were not long enough to use a proper heel-lock lacing technique, which likely could have fixed the issue.

rabbit High Country Feel

I really liked how all the shoeโ€™s layers work together. The combination of Flowstate foam, adaptive Carbon Trax plates, and the stable platform creates a ride that feels smooth and cohesive rather than overbuilt.

Looking at the images on rabbitโ€™s website, it seems like a lot is happening inside the shoe, and honestly, there is, but on the run, everything feels well integrated.

rabbit High County OutsoleThe cushioning stays comfortable over long miles without losing stability or protection. Across every distance and terrain I ran, the High Country remained both protective and responsive, which really is all I can want in an all-in-one trail shoe. Well, that and maybe a little more room in the laces.

Similar Shoes to rabbit High Country

Weโ€™ve tested a few trail running shoes that feel similar, but different based on the brand fit:
  • HOKA Speedgoat 6 โ€“ Wider fit with a softer, more plush ride.
  • Nike Wildhorse โ€“ More cushion, less precision.
  • Brooks Cascadia โ€“ Heavier and more traditionally protective.

Our Verdict

89%

The rabbit High Country shoe is a strong trail shoe built for long distances and any terrain. With excellent traction and a stable, cushioned ride, itโ€™s well-suited for runners tackling big mountain days. This shoe will work especially well for runners with narrower feet. If your feet are more medium or wide, sizing up is worth considering.
