If you are considering a juice cleanse, review day 1 {the right way to do a juice cleanse} and day 2 {touted benefits of juice cleanse} as well!
I was EXCITED to do it because I wanted to stop some post marathon snacking habits that I brought home from NYC {darn you Hershey World!}. That being said, I also really like to chew food. I like crunchy things when I feel stressed, so I started to wonder what foods are ok if I’m going to go off course a bit and that brought mind some other questions I often get about smoothies v juices and such.
10 Juicing FAQs
- I want to juice but only have a blender: It’s actually possible! I use a Vitamix which makes almost anything seem like a juice, but you can also by these cheap mesh bag strainers and pour your smoothie through it.
- How long is juice good for? With something like Skinny Limits it’s a fresh juice, meaning there are no additives like say Naked, so you need to drink it right away {during the cleanse}.
- What is this cold pressed juice business? It’s a method of juicing that is theorized to keep more of the fresh ingredients’ nutrients intact because they don’t produce as much heat as normal blending.
- Why can’t I just buy Naked juice? No one says you can’t, but the benefits aren’t the same. Naked contains a lot of sugars, additives and isn’t the same thing as a raw, organic juice. Checkout the ingredient list and you’ll see it’s not a whole food.
- How much weight will I lose? Please refer to the benefits post and if you are doing it for weight loss make sure you are ready to change your eating habits after the cleanse.
- What about protein? Plants do contain protein and something like Skinny Limits finishing your day with a drink that contains healthy fats and protein. However, as I’ve noted before I think juicing is a supplement not a way to live. I don’t believe in cutting out entire food groups unless you have an allergy.
- Is a juice cleanse safe? Barring an allergy to the ingredients or a medical condition, yes. It can be stressful though so that impacts health.
- What’s a good starter juice? I like this one from Skinny Limits called the Body Cleanse Green Juice. Sweet enough to whet your appetite for juicing and some ginger to help get your digestive tract moving.
- How much am I juicing each day on a cleanse? Continue to aim for around 1200 calories for women, which is usually 4-6 juices of 16 to 20 oz. Seriously this is a boatload of work and why I would probably only do it through a service.
- Can I exercise? Yes…but if you exercise like I do with marathon training and such, plan to do this on a rest week or recovery week. You may feel light headed or simply need more calories than you will be getting from juicing.
- Bonus question! If I am hungry during the cleanse and choose to eat, what’s ok? You probably know the answer, but it’s whole foods. Most recommend raw, but I know that makes me feel bad so I steamed my veggies. Examples: Broth, nuts, fruits, veggies, green tea.
DEAR DIARY DAY 3
Hunger: Surprisingly no overwhelming hunger or anything this morning. More than anything I just want to chew some food so a few more almonds and a couple wheat thins were enjoyed with my juice.
Exercise: Easy ride bike trainer and some walking
Feeling: Energized, clear headed.
Mood: Normal
Food: Couple almonds, 11 AM 1 tbsp nut butter + 1/2 cup soaked gluten free oats {Love Grown}
Unfortunately on Day 3, I simply got way off schedule and then I started pondering what would happen the next day and had some concerns that going from all juice to regular food would make my stomach hurt. I decided to eat steamed veggies and a baked falafel for dinner, keeping 2 green juices and 1/2 the cashew drink for the following day.
NOTE: My stomach kind of hurt after actually eating…maybe should have started with soup?!
Detox: A few skin breakouts…not sure this was detox as much as a little stress.
