If you’re staying in downtown Austin, then I’ve got some easy to get to spots that are perfect for getting in your miles.
Runsploring isn’t just a workout to get in the miles, it’s a way to really experience all that a city has to offer.
In fact, this is such a key part of my travels that it’s one of the first things I work in to my schedule.
During a packed press trip to Prague, I was out the door by 4AM because I knew that what I’d find during my run would surpass hours on the bus. As we traversed the countryside of Ireland, David and I both agreed that our afternoon explorations on foot (or bike) were so much more rewarding than the tours.
Where to Run in Austin
For years, friends have raved about Austin, but I had no idea why.
After my short trip, I can tell it’s a city that deserves more time! While I’m not so much in to the late night party hours any more, I love the music scene, the food, the availability of running options and it’s a great walkable city!
Let’s dive in to the part that made me the happiest, running!!
There are an insane number of running groups around Austin, so if that makes you feel safer then find one to connect with, but I’ll say I passed so many runners I never once (even early the morning) felt worried.
Urban: 6th Street
For those of you like myself who love finding great street art, downtown Austin will not disappoint.
6th Street is largely known for it’s fantastic nightlife and string of bars, which are very reminiscent of Nashville.
Of course this can make for some interesting morning runs. While the signs aren’t lit up, it’s all just fun to see.
But beyond that, if you keep your eyes peeled then you’ll find a number of beautiful pieces of street art, restaurants and of course plenty of others out running, walking and exploring this main artery of the city.
Waterfront: Lady Bird Lake
Just a few blocks from downtown, you’ll run in to the water.
While others are pulling out kayaks or boarding pontoon boats to enjoy the views, you’ll know something they don’t…it’s perfection from the shore!
If you happen to be in town for a long run, you can hit the combination dirt and pavement path for a full 10 mile loop around Lady Bird lake.
Austin Boardwalk Trail
As you cross over from the downtown side, you’ll enjoy running along what’s called the Boardwalk.
Suddenly you’ve left the feeling of the city behind though you’re still right there.
Technically the boardwalk is just part of completing the full 10.1 mile loop all the way around Lady Bird Lake. The boardwalk on it’s own is only about a mile long, but it’s a super fun run experience!
Butler Metro Park
Another option that’s close to downtown and can make for some good loops if you get nervous about getting lost is this central park.
You’ll see water fountains and playgrounds and a newly opened garden. Evening runners will get a special treat as all of the fountains light up and truly take on some spectacular glows
Where to eat after a run in Austin?
Unfortunately, I was really limiting my food to figure out some sensitivities so I can’t rave about what they have on tap.
But I heard about in every day and the variety of options are endless, though BBQ sounds like the must have. I can vouch for the fabulous Whole Foods that is downtown, ha!
Honestly, I have a few other potential run Austin trips later this year and now I’m more excited to go because I know what a fun place this is!
