Glow in the Dark Running Shoes Look Cool, But There’s a Catch

Select running shoe designs are slowly starting to blend with streetwear and sneaker culture, becoming more than just useful, comfortable tools to get us from point A, to several other distant locations, and eventually all the way back to point A.

Take a look at Stadium Goods and you’ll see dozens of pairs of adidas EVO SLs and New Balance Rebel v5s for sale at prices ranging from comfortably below retail to what I can only classify as an “exorbitant splurge.”

Seriously, I don’t ever see myself spending $475 on a Bob Marley Bold Gold pair of EVO SLs.

You can see this shift in certain colorways, too. Rather than colorful outliers mixed into the usual lineup of black, white, grey, and blue, we’re starting to see running shoes that look like something Action Bronson might wear.

The new atmos x adidas EVO SL “G-SNK” is another example of the crossover between streetwear and functional running footwear.

The atmos x adidas EVO SL “G-SNK” is built with the same Lightstrike Pro midsole many of us have come to know and love. During the day, it looks like any other EVO SL. But at night, the magic happens: adidas’ signature three stripes light up with atmos’ glow in the dark snake pattern.

The atmos x adidas EVO SL “G-SNK” will be released in two colorways, black and white, with speculation pointing toward a Fall 2026 general release.

At first glance, this sounds like a great thing. After all, anything that makes runners more visible in the dark or other low light conditions seems like a win.

But glow in the dark materials need to absorb light before they can glow. If your shoes haven’t spent enough time exposed to light beforehand, that glowing effect may be inconsistent at best.

And this is hardly a new phenomenon. Two years ago, Brooks released glow in the dark versions of the Ghost Max 2 and Adrenaline GTS 24.

Without the involvement of an established streetwear brand, though, releases like these often go mostly unnoticed by the general running public.

Another recent collaboration gives us something a little more practical, if decidedly more nostalgic: the UP THERE x ASICS GEL-KAYANO 20 “Safety Yellow.”

It does what so many brands are doing right now in service of the nostalgic wave washing over aging millennials everywhere, myself very much included, by bringing back the designs of yesteryear.

This bright neon Kayano will retail for $197 and releases August 20. It comes decked out with reflective elements across the upper, clear GEL inserts in the heel, and even the old Trusstic stability shank through the arch.

This could be my inner “old man yelling at clouds” speaking, but I tend to categorize shoes like the atmos x adidas EVO SL “G-SNK” and UP THERE x ASICS GEL-KAYANO 20 “Safety Yellow” as being more for collectors and sneakerheads than Running Shoe Geeks.

Sure, being more visible at night is a good thing. As someone who has found himself turned into a giant hood ornament at the whim of a careless driver on one occasion, I get it.

But the technology that allows running shoes to reflect light has existed for decades, and it doesn’t need time to charge.

Shoes like the EVO SL “G-SNK” and GEL-KAYANO 20 “Safety Yellow” may not be designed primarily for the everyday runner. They’re also meant to appeal to the shoe collector.

If your top two bookmarks are StockX and Stadium Goods, these shoes might be for you.

But if you’re a regular Run to the Finish reader looking for your next pair of actual training shoes, the ASICS GEL-KAYANO 33, released in June, is much more likely to be what you’re after.

Tim was born and raised in Southern California, where he still resides with his fiancé. As a youngster he excelled at covering short distances quickly, while simultaneously unable to run a mile without stopping. Over the last four-plus years he’s learned, and continues to learn, the art of long distance running, especially heart rate based training. The first 13 miles of the half marathon are his favorite distance (he’s twice suffered pulled muscles sprinting through the last 0.1 miles). He runs because he wants to continue to go farther than his younger self would have ever believed possible.
